Courses for each semester during the first year must be selected in consultation with the DGS, and students who have not met with him/her may not be cleared to register. At the end of their first year, students are directed to their thesis advisors for the remainder of their academic study to discuss matters of registration and academic advising. Studio Art track: The Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) in Studio Art advises students admitted the Studio Art program. Students admitted to the Studio Art program may also opt to be advised by the mentor selected and assigned to them at the time of their admission to the program. Courses for each semester must be selected in consultation with the DGS, and students who have not done so may not be cleared to register. Thesis AdvisingBy the end of the first year, each student should have a major professor to serve as mentor and thesis advisor. The professor should be familiar with the areas of the student’s intended work and be willing to accept this responsibility. The advisor serves as mentor in guiding the student through his/her course of study in the program. Master’s students are responsible for formally requesting to work with a specific thesis advisor, who must have mentor status within the graduate faculty. The faculty member must agree to act as advisor to the specific project the student is proposing, and it is assumed that the advisor’s area of specialization will correspond to the proposed project. Program Requirements & FormsUnderstanding the Program FormsProgram forms are below for all of the degrees offered in the Department of Fine Arts– the B.A. in Art History, the B.A. in Studio Art, and the B.F.A. programs in 2-D Studios, 3-D Studios, Interior Architecture, and Communication Art & Design. Please do not hesitate to contact your advisor with any questions about requirements you do not understand. Not doing so could cause you to take courses you do not need and unneccesarily extend your stay at the University. The General Education Requirements course list, the WR Requirements course list, and a list of Studio Art and Art History courses can be found on the A&S Advising website at http://louisville.edu/advising/units/as.html Need a program form? Unofficial Program Sheets
These unofficial program forms outline the courses required to graduate in each area. This in no way substitutes a meeting with your advisor. Requirements periodically change, course blocks may need to be lifted in order to register and specific courses are often offered only during certain times and semesters - a meeting with your advisor is the best way to plan your course of study. These forms are meant to be unofficial guides only.
