Admissions
Admissions
The Department of Fine Arts is a selective admissions department, which means that all students must apply to be admitted to the Department before taking studio classes. Acceptance is limited and competitive and submission of an application does not guarantee admission. Acceptance depends on satisfactory academic performance, as well as artistic, educational, and career goals which meet Departmental standard. The Department has Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Graduate and Doctoral programs in both Studio Art and Art History. Applying to the Department of Fine Arts:I want to major in studio art or art history. What do I need to do? When should I apply to be an art major? Should I apply for the BA or BFA program? All studio majors enter the department in the B.A. program in Studio Art and are eligible to apply for the BFA once they have completed the prerequisites for the program (see Admission to Bachelor of Fine Arts Program below). The B.A. program provides students with a broad experience in studio art. It consists of a minimum of four 300-level courses and two 500-level in studio art and is recommended for students who wish to further their study in fields such as art education or expressive therapies. The B.F.A. program is designed for students who wish to have a pre-professional experience in studio art. It is ideal for those who wish to continue study at the graduate level and pursue careers in University teaching or as professional artists. The B.F.A program consists of in-depth study in one or more of the studio areas. Students also work closely with a faculty advisor/mentor to guide their study.
Undergraduate AdmissionsAdmission to Bachelors of Arts (BA) Programs
All Undergraduate students wishing to take studio art classes in the Department must first submit an Application for Admission for a Major in Fine Arts. BFA applications are accepted only from students currently in the BA program.
