SUMMARY:Stephen Cartwright\: The Sutherland Endowed Chair in Glass Lecture
DESCRIPTION:For more than ten years Stephen\nCartwright has recorded h
is exact\nlatitude\, longitude and elevation\nevery hour of every day.
This data\nis embodied physically in his\nsculptural objects. While w
 orking in\nthe exhibit industry\, making displays\nand prototypes\, Ca
 rtwright was\nintroduced to the possibilities of\ndigital fabrication\
, a technique he\nfrequently uses in his current work.\nCartwright was
lured away from the\nexhibit industry to complete several\ngrand bicy
cle journeys through\nNorth America\, Europe and Asia\,\ntotaling more
than 20\,000 miles. He\nrelished the complete immersion in\nthe lands
cape and culture that selfcontained\nbicycle travel afforded.\nWhile C
artwright continues his work\nrelated to his latitude and longitude\nr
ecordings\, other recent work\nfocuses on human alteration of the\nnat
ural landscape.\nCartwright earned a BA in Studio\nArt from the Univer
sity of California\,\nDavis and an MFA in Sculpture from\nTyler School
of Art. Cartwright is\ncurrently an assistant professor in\nsculpture
at the University of Illinois\nat Urbana-Champaign and longs for\nthe
  topographical relief that informs\nhis practice.
