Art History

The Art History Program offers the B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in the history of art. Our graduates have taken their place in a wide variety of professional fields requiring art historical expertise, including historic preservation, university teaching, scholarly research and writing, elementary and secondary education, art galleries, museum professions, art auctions and appraisals, visual resources, and archaeological investigations.

The curriculum includes a broad range of courses, from introductory classes for non-art majors through advanced graduate seminars. The Art History Program offers specialized courses at all levels in the areas of faculty expertise, covering Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Early Christian, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, African, African-American, Modern, and Contemporary art and architecture. Courses are also available in the history of photography, history of ceramics, history of graphic design, historic interiors, museum methods, curatorial studies, and the history of prints.

In addition to the resources of the Speed Art Museum, situated adjacent to campus, an outstanding collection of prints and drawings is available to our students for either independent or class study. The Margaret M. Bridwell Art Library houses the University's research collection in art, design and architectural history. The library's strong collection of books, journals and electronic resources are available for student use.

The Visual Resources Center provides images for classes throughout the University and is also available for student use. In conjunction with the Center, the Art History Program is oriented toward keeping pace with new computer technologies in the field. Enriching the Program, the Department's Visiting Artists and Scholars Series frequently invites eminent artists and scholars to lecture on topics of interest to our students. The Frederick Lindley Morgan Chair of Architectural Design brings a distinguished scholar or architect to the Department to teach an advanced seminar for one semester each academic year.

Aegis, the graduate student organization publishes the Parnasus and organizes a biennial symposium.
