FacilitiesThe Department of Fine Arts, along with the Department of Theater Arts and the School of Music, provides unique arts programming for the campus and Louisville communities. The department oversees four galleries with a year-round schedule of exhibitions. It also operates the Visual Resources Center with over 375,000 slides and over 15,000 digital images. The Margaret M. Bridwell Art Library houses one of the largest collections of its kind in the southeast, with over 80,000 volumes and subscriptions to over 300 domestic and foreign journals and museum bulletins. The Department of Fine Arts has a significant presence in three Belknap campus buildings: Schneider Hall, Lutz Hall, and HPES/ Studio Arts. We also utilize classrooms in the Humanities Building and teach classes in the Speed Art Museum. Schneider Hall houses the Department’s main offices, Art Library, 3 galleries and an exhibition preparation area, foundation 2-D and 3-D design studios and foundation drawing studios, 2-D studio art programs (painting, drawing, printmaking and photography), fiber studios, interior architecture studios, and communication art & design studios including computer and design labs. The 3-D studio art program’s ceramics and sculpture studios are located in HPES/Studio Arts along with a foundry and kiln pad. The art history offices and the Visual Resources Center are located in Lutz Hall. The department’s 3-D glass program and expanded sculpture facilities along with additional exhibition galleries, are housed in the Cressman Center for Visual Arts, located in downtown Louisville. Download a Map of Hite Art Institute Locations Academic & Studio SpacesSchneider HallSchneider Hall houses studio facilities, classrooms, and computer labs in art education, drawing, fibers, graphic design, interior design, photography, printmaking, and painting as well as the Department Office. The Department's Morris B. Belknap, Jr., and Dario A. Covi, Gallery X sponsor significant exhibitions during the academic year. These facilities are also located in Schneider Hall and are open for student exhibitions. Lutz HallThe Art History Offices of the Department of Fine Arts are housed in Lutz Hall along with The Visual Resources Center, with more than 375,000 slides and 15,000 digital images, and the Print Room, a substantial collection of original prints and drawings accessible to graduate students for study and research. HPES BuildingThe ceramics and sculpture facilities are housed in the Studio Arts/HPES Building. Cressman CenterThe glass program and expanded sculpture facilities are located at the Cressman Center for Visual Arts in downtown Louisville. The gallery at Cressman also sponsors significant exhibitions during the year. Bridwell Art LibraryThe Margaret M. Bridwell Art Library houses the University's research collection in art, design, art history and architectural history. Detailed information about the collections and services can be found at louisville.edu/library/art. The Hite Art Institute Galleries feature rotating monthly exhibitions of national and regional artists, craftspersons and designers, as well as provide students a venue to exhibit work in BFA and MA Thesis Exhibitions. Pieces from the Hite Art Institute's collection, which includes almost 3,000 original works of art, are also periodically put on display. Students in the Fine Arts program have the opportunity to gain inspiration, learn new techniques and develop scholarly insight from visiting any of our galleries throughout the year. main entrance on the West side of the building. Schneider Hall is on the
University of Louisville's Belknap Campus, the main campus for the
University.

Main Street, at the corner of First and Main,in downtown Louisville. The Visual Resources CenterThe Visual Resources Center maintains the department’s slide and digital image collections. The center’s extensive holdings comprise 375,000 analog slides and 15,000 digital images, as well as a catalog database, providing support for the department’s areas of study–Studio Art, Art History, and Critical & Curatorial Studies. The scope of the collection covers all art historical periods. Significant portions are dedicated to the architecture of Louisville as well as local collections, such as the Speed Museum and the university’s own art holdings. Services and facilities include light tables for working with slides, a study room with slide projectors, laptop computers and data projector for classroom use, and reference assistance. Graduate students are encouraged to make use of the Center’s collection for course presentations, teaching, lectures given at conferences, and preparing theses and dissertations. Circulation PoliciesSlide checkout: Students in fine arts classes may use the collection for class presentations. Fine arts students taking courses outside the Department may also check out slides for class presentations. Students may pull slides prior to their class presentations, leave them on reserve in the VRC, and work with them as needed. Checkout period is for class time only. Slides must be returned directly after class. For classes that end after VRC hours, slides are to be returned to the circulation desk in the Art Library. Slide and digital image production: The VRC makes slides or scans as needed for graduate students in fine arts classes. Students must check the collection for the images before ordering and provide books, journals or other printed materials for photography or scanning. Turnaround time for orders is normally two weeks.
