Archaeology Minor

Information for students interested in minoring in archaeology.

Archaeology examines the nature of societies of the past through recovery and study of their material remains.

The Center for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage, housed in historic Portland  at 1606 Rowan St., offers diverse opportunities to the student interested in regional archaeology.  Our faculty and staff have been actively collecting materials since 1968.  Presently, the Center maintains the second largest collection in the state.  There are collections from 1,564 archaeological sites from five southern Indiana counties and 60 Kentucky counties.  Materials range in age from Late Pleistocene vertebrate fauna to early 20th century urban neighborhoods.  The majority of the collections come from the counties in Kentucky and Indiana near the Falls of the Ohio. We also maintain a library of historic cemetery records, regional excavation and survey reports as well as print journals and books.

Potential research opportunities for the student in archaeology are numerous.  Faculty and staff interests vary widely in both period and region.  Opportunities to become involved in field work locally in Louisville and the region are available. Additional field opportunities exist abroad in Europe, Africa, and South America.

The Center has well-equipped laboratories for field work, analyses of human and animal bones, artifacts, soils and sediments, and preparation of samples for biomolecular and isotopic analyses. The Center also has several total stations, photography and scanning equipment, computing facilities, and handheld spectrometric devices.
