Study Abroad in Portugal
The College of Arts & Sciences and the Portuguese Studies Program sponsor summer study in Portugal for UofL undergraduate students. Portugal, a key country in the history of globalization, is an important site for the study of society and politics in the European Union, and of links between Europe, Africa, the United States, and South America.
During the summer program, our student group will travel to universities in the Portuguese cities of Lisbon, Vila Real, and Chaves.
The U of L courses offered focus on:
- The relationship between Portugal and Spain
- Cultural traditions in Europe
- European integration
- The relationship between country and city
- Tourism's effects on economics and politics
- The relationship between ecology and politics
- The Portuguese language
Program Overview
Students participating in the summer program will study at both the University of Trás-os-Montese Alto Douro (UTAD) and the Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa (ISCTE) in the cities of Vila Real, Chaves, and Lisbon.
University of Trás-os-Montese e Alto Duro (UTAD)
Because UTAD is one of the newest public universities in Portugal, it is dynamic, flexible, and open to new international contacts. The main campus is in Vila Real; there are two satellite campuses, one in Chaves, and the other in Miranda do Douro
Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa (ISCTE)
ISCTE is the premier university in Portugal for study in the social sciences and business. It is popular with European students wishing to combine the studyt of social sciences with the study of the Portuguese language.
Lisbon
Lisbon occupies one of the most beautiful natural settings in Europe. The city of two million inhabitants was, according to ancient Greek myth, founded by Ulysses. With age-old migration and trade connections to Asia, Africa, the Americas, and the rest of Europe, Lisbon is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world.
Vila Real
Vila Real is a mountain city located above a spectacular river gorge in northern Portugal. Continuously inhabited since the Paleolithic, it has numerous archaeological sites, as well as many palaces, natural parks, museums, and an active student life.
Chaves
Chaves is a northern Portuguese city famous for its Roman past. It is a frontier city; here Spanish and Portuguese society and culture interact intensely. Chaves' surrounding landscape is strongly Mediterranean in character; the surrounding region is renowned for its hot springs and spas.
