African American Theatre Program hosts MLK events
Two events—a festive cabaret and a commemoration to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.—will be offered in January 2013 by the University of Louisville’s African American Theatre Program (AATP).
A Jan. 20 Martin Luther King Jr. Cabaret will feature Rhodessa Jones, co-artistic director of San Francisco’s Cultural Odyssey performance program and founder of the Medea Project. The actress, singer and writer will be joined by Cultural Odyssey co-director Idris Ackamoor, a tap dance and alto sax performer. Other performers will include “Ms. LadiSoulSinger” Erica Denise and her band; spoken word artists Gary Brice and Chanita Taylor; and blues singer “Ma Rainey.”
The cabaret will be 7:30 p.m.-10 p.m. at Thrust Theatre, 2314 S. Floyd St. Tickets (which include food, beer and wine) are $40 before Dec. 20, $45 before Jan. 1, and $50 after Jan. 1 and at the door. Admission is for adults 21 and older with identification. For tickets, check aatp.eventbrite.com or charge by phone (after Jan. 7) at 502-852-6814; for information, call 502-852-8443.
The cabaret is a fundraiser for the AATP’s 20th anniversary in 2013-14.
A free, public program Jan. 21 will celebrate King’s work with a performance, music and special recognition for the Lincoln Foundation and its president emeritus, Samuel Robinson. The program begins at 1 p.m. in The Playhouse, Cardinal Boulevard between Second and Third streets.
The program will feature:
- Keynote address by Jones about the Medea Project to help incarcerated women
- Presentation of the Thomas C. Smith Service Award to the Lincoln Foundation and Robinson for their work to promote racial and social justice
- Performance by tap dancer and alto sax musician Ackamoor
- Dramatic presentation by UofL’s AATP
- Music by the Black Diamond Choir
The program is co-sponsored by AATP and UofL’s Office of Business Affairs. Parking is free in lots adjacent to the School of Music and College of Business.
