2010 Alumnus of the Year
Salem M George, M.D.
Salem George obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry in 1955 from the University of Louisville and later earned his medical degree from UofL in 1959. After completing his internship at St. Joseph Hospital in Louisville, George received his Kentucky license and joined the Board Certified American Academy of Family Physicians in 1966. Dr. George is celebrating his 50th year of medical practice in 2010.
As a solo practitioner with a strong attachment to rural life, George has built a large medical practice and facility in Lebanon, Ky., with six other physicians, including his son, David. Since 1960, Dr. George has delivered more than 6,000 infants. George serves on numerous civic and professional boards including the UofL Board of Trustees where he serves as vice-chair, and the UofL Foundation Board. Additionally, he serves on Norton Healthcare’s Board of Governors and Medical Ethics Committee board, the Spring View Hospital Board of Trustees, Health Kentucky Board of Directors, and the Kentucky Medical Association Board of Trustees. He has been a member of the Marion County Health Board for more than 40 years.
George serves as his UofL Class Agent and since graduation has organized their reunions. He acts as a preceptor for medical students and a mentor to undergraduates. He and his wife, Eva, actively recruit on UofL’s behalf and have sponsored many disadvantaged students. George maintains memberships with the American Medical Association, the Kentucky Medical Association, and the Kentucky Institute of Medicine, among others. During his career, Dr. George has received numerous awards and recognition including UofL’s Department of Family and Geriatric Medicine, the American Medical Association, Kentucky Medical Association, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Kentucky Association Health Care Facility, and the Jaycees of Kentucky. George and his wife live in Lebanon, the absolute geographic center of Kentucky. They have five children.
