About
Be an Advocate? Me?
Of course you can be an advocate for change! Anyone who can make a phone call, write a letter or send an e-mail can help. If you believe in the importance of UofL and, indeed, all of higher education to Kentucky, then by all means make your voice heard by signing up today. The most important part of the UofL Advocates program is your participation.
What is the UofL Advocates Program?
The UofL Advocates program is a grassroots effort relying on friends and alumni of the University of Louisville to raise public awareness about the importance of UofL to Kentucky's future. A strong UofL contributes to a strong Kentucky.
Advocates like you serve as ambassadors within your community. You help advance the university's legislative agenda and raise awareness of UofL's accomplishments.
Our advocates come from every walk of life and reside in every corner of the commonwealth. They are united by their interest in improving UofL's well-being.
How can you make a difference?
First, sign up! By joining, you'll receive email updates from us letting you know about important bills and how you can help.
As a UofL Advocate member, you can make a positive difference for the University of Louisville and, ultimately, the commonwealth of Kentucky.
Advocates like you cultivate positive relationships with legislators and other community and state leaders, keeping decision makers better informed about UofL and higher education issues. Advocates write letters, make telephone calls and even attend events on behalf of the university.
What are your responsibilities?
As an informed advocate who understands issues affecting UofL and higher education in Kentucky, you may decide to:
- Write letters to the governor and your state legislators
- Make telephone calls to your state legislators
- Develop relationships with your legislators
- Write letters to your local newspapers
- Recruit new advocates
- Serve as a ambassador for UofL within your community
- Attend university-sponsored events in your area
Advocacy vs. lobbying
As a member of the UofL Advocates, you are a volunteer. This means that you are not required to register as a lobbyist since you are not engaged as a legislative agent by the university. If you are a University of Louisville employee or are compensated by UofL in any way, or if you work for an entity that uses legislative agents, you may fall under separate guidelines and should talk to a member of the Advocates staff or your employer before making contact with state legislators or officeholders.
