Meet the Scholars!

Biographies of the Ali Scholars

Bristol's Pic


Bristol Mann is a junior Geography major at the University of Louisville. She is from Louisville, although she transferred to the University of Louisville from Johnson and Wales University, a culinary school in Providence, Rhode Island.  She is interested in human and environmental geography and the vast inequalities in access to fresh food in urban areas.  In June of 2009 she helped catalyze a new non-profit organization called New Roots.  She spends most of her time with her two year old son, Kinjé and her husband Danté, school, New Roots, and with the Ali Scholars.  She plans to stay at the University of Louisville to obtain her MS in Applied Geography once she graduates.

Mohamad Ndiaye was born Mohamad Albachirou Ndiaye on January 8th, 1990, in Bronx New York. At the age of two my parents sent me to Africa to live with my aunt. This way I could better understand my religion and culture back home in Senegal. At the age of nine,  I return to the United States, living in Annapolis, MD., to live with my parents. My parents believed that I could get a better education in the U.S., they turned out to be right; in 2008 I graduated from Jeffersontown High School, with a full scholarship to attend the University of Louisville.  I am currently a sophomore, pursuing a degree in business marketing.

Whitney Newell is a third year student at the University of Louisville. She is majoring in Social Work with a minor in Pan-African Studies. While her school work is most important to her, she also thinks that it is important to be a well rounded student involving herself in extracurricular activities. She is a part of the Society of Porter Scholars, Membership Chair for the Association of Black Students, Secretary for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Youth and College Chapter at the University of Louisville, and also a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

 

 

 

Amanda's Pic


Amanda Simmons is a double major in English and Psychology with a double minor in Spanish and Race and Gender Studies.  She plans on attending graduate school to get her Ph.D. so that she can research and create treatment plans to improve the lives of other people. She stays active by playing on the volleyball team and volunteering in the community. She feels happiest when she is making someone else smile, so her life has been characterized by helping others and listening to their problems.  She truly believes that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, so through the Ali Institute, she hopes to learn the tools and skills necessary to improve the lives of others within the United States and beyond.

Kathriena L. Greenwell was born November 19.  Katheriena has a very large family; she is one of eleven children.  Kathriena is very interested in traveling to various countries across the world because she loves to learn about new people and cultures. She also loves to be outdoors and be active. She is very excited about the opportunities to come with the Muhammad Ali Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of Louisville and can't see the changes that will be made in the world!

 

 

 

Jonathan's Pic


Jonathan Krigger is currently a junior at the University of Louisville pursuing a Philosophy/Political Science double major. Born in Louisville, Jonathan has lived here all his life but draws his interests from a variety of disciplines and interests from around the world. Jonathan follows an interest in visual arts, many styles of dance, and the philosophies of the world. he has received minor instruction in the former as well as writing, acting, computer programming and music. Graduating from the Math Science & Technology Program at DuPont Manual High School he spent a semester at Jefferson Community & Technical College before transferring to U of L.

 

 

Janessa's Pic

Janessa Siegel was born in Louisville, KY on August 8, the only girl of three children.  She has been involved within her community every since preschool and continues to strive to help where she can. Janessa gets her music ability from her mother, but has also developed an interest in dancing and began dancing in church and also with local community groups.  She also joined everyone reads and mentoring programs.  She is currently a CONNECT mentor, a supernova mentor, and a Everyone Reads Volunteer.  Janessa believes through her talents that she has born with she will be able to help change the way people view things, and approach things.

 

 

Gwen's Pic


Gwen Rucker daughter of Byron and Stacy Ingram and Keith McGlon. She was born April 28th and is in her second year at the University of Louisville.  Gwen's major is Chemistry, which keeps her very busy in the classroom, when not in the classroom she is busy with basketball and volleyball teams at the University of Louisville. She loves to eat pasta and spend money that she doesn't have. She is planning on being a doctor and helping people who can't help themselves.
