Class attendance in college is very different from what may have taken place in high school. You should make every effort to attend all of your classes, but sometimes things happen. On those occasions where missing class is unavoidable, you want to make sure that you step up and address the situation immediately. Always refer back to your course syllabus as it will provide you with critical information regarding the attendance policies that your instructor has designed for your class. Be honest and courteous when speaking with your professor regarding the reason why you have or will miss their class. Remember, you're not the first student to miss a class for good reason, but your professor has probably heard a lot of the dog at my homework stories as well. It's also a good idea to obtain some sort of documentation regarding your absence if possible as this will add support to your request.

If you know in advance that you are going to miss a class session, make sure that you contact your professor before you miss the class to make him or her aware of the situation. A face-to-face conversation is always a good idea in this case. Let the instructor know when you'll be out and discuss with them how you should go about submitting any work that may be due on the day that you are out. If you have a test or other major assignment scheduled to occur that day, you'll also want to discuss how this assignment will be rescheduled. It's also a good idea to send a follow-up message to your professor summarizing what you've discussed, just to be sure that both of you are on the same page. Yeah, this all sounds pretty formal, but you want your professor to take you seriously as a student right? One more thing, you'll want to make arrangements with a trusty classmate to get the class notes for the day that you're out. (Just don't make plans with the guy that always falls asleep in the back of the room or else your class notes may be a bit spotty.)

So what should you do on that morning that your car won't start, or your sick, or life throws some other unexpected monkey wrench at you and you have to miss class? The same general rules apply here as well. You'll want to check your syllabus, and contact the professor. In this instance, a face-to-face meeting won't be possible so you'll want to attempt to either call or email the professor. Your ability to make alternate arrangements regarding missed class work or major assignments may be severely limited do to unexpected nature of your absence. You should also talk to a class mate about getting the information that you missed.

Also, realize that there are no guarantees when it comes to being allowed to make up missed work. Most professors will try to work with students, but there are some who may not be as flexible. Again this is where knowing what's been published in your course syllabus comes in handy.
