Composition Graduate Zhiyi Wang '06 Music Played at Olympics Opening Ceremony
University of Louisville alumnus Zhiyi Wang probably never imagined that a song he composed would have a single worldwide audience of as many as four billion people - but it will Aug. 8 during Beijing Olympic Games opening ceremony. Read the full story at http://php.louisville.edu/news/news.php?news=1201
Dear friends,
My work for the Olympics is going to the end, and I just can’t wait the night, August 8, to come. The one year’s hard work enormously richened my experiences both in music and life, though sometimes I feel I was in the hell, the high pressure of work, the patience to task as well as to people, the challenge to the limit, etc. are all unknown to the public. But anyway, it is the price, and it is absolutely a treasure to me.
I am excited to tell you that I’ve become a member of the composing team for the ceremony, and I am the youngest one. My own composition “Fanfare for the ceremony” will be performed when Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee and Liu Qi, President of the Beijing Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games, enter the stadium to make their opening speeches. I also arranged four programs for orchestra and choir and co-orchestrated the theme song of the 39th Olympiad with the music director Qigang Chen.
Finally, I want you know that I would not have been competent to do this important task without my experience at Louisville. Be sure to watch the ceremony!
Best regards,
Zhiyi |
Preparatory Department becomes
Community Music Program
The University of Louisville Preparatory Department will now be known
as the Community Music Program (CMP).
“The reason we changed the name was to be more inclusive. We offer
instruction for everyone, not simply “prep” students. The name
community seems friendlier and tends to reach out to anyone interested
in learning how to play an instrument,” said Vernon Cherrix, Director
of the Community Music Program.
Beginning in 1932, when it merged with the Louisville Conservatory of
Music, the University of Louisville School of Music always offered
musical training to the community at large, in most recent years, this
was the mission of the “preparatory division.”
The current Community Music Program offers music lessons in a variety
of areas to students of all ages wishing to further their knowledge of
music and gain a greater proficiency in musical performance. Traditional
and special music training programs are available in the form of weekly
private lessons, Suzuki Method music training, and special programs for
children aged 18 months to 3½ years.
New this fall is the College Preparatory Program for high school
students wanting to pursue music as a college major. After successful
completion, the student becomes eligible for a full tuition scholarship
to the University of Louisville.
In addition to the downtown campus located in the University of
Louisville School of Music, the Community Music Program is also
available in the Oldham County Arts Center in Crestwood, Kentucky. For
more information on all programs offered by the Community Music Program,
please call 502.852.5850 or visit their website at

International Brass Chamber Music Festival
University of Louisville School of Music
October 11th through 14th, 2008

The festival will host three top ranking brass ensembles. International Trumpet Guild Journal calls Spanish Brass "one of the most exciting and artistic brass quintets to come on the scene in recent years... a gloriously brilliant performance." Diane Wright with The Herald in Everett, Washington says of Proteus 7 that "these young musicians have an ease of playing and a genuine respect that makes you realize how vital it is for young people to see such groups." Gary Barrow of the ITG Journal writes of Sonus Brass, "sounds as tight as any brass quintet around!…consistently strong performances and energetic spirit…an exemplar in the fundamentals of quality ensemble playing."
All three of these ensembles will be providing workshops as well as concerts.
