The International Center offers students a wide range of opportunities to study abroad. The University of Louisville offers direct Study Abroad opportunities in various locales around the globe, including short-term programs in China, Panama, Portugal, and Trinidad & Tobago. We also have a special relationship with the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi in Canada. Through special consortia arrangements with the Cooperative Center for Study Abroad (CCSA), the Kentucky Institute for International Study (KIIS), and International Studies Abroad (ISA), students may do short-term and long-term programs in over 30 countries around the world. Students are also welcome to work with the Study Abroad staff to identify other qualified educational programs through other hosts.
How the program works
Students work with Study Abroad advisors to identify potential programs for their studies abroad. Considerations may include academic goals, destination possibilities, duration of study, and cost. Once the program is selected, potential courses are also identified and a draft budget drawn up. The student will prepare the applications and gather documentation for review with academic and financial advisors. Acceptance to the Study Abroad program and completion of the U of L paperwork will lead the student to a successful program abroad.
Students apply and register for all U of L-sponsored programs at U of L. These include the short-term programs in China, Panama, Portugal, and Trinidad & Tobago. Students also register for short-term CCSA Study Abroad courses at U of L. They must complete a “Cooperative Center for Study Abroad” course information form.
The short-term summer University of Quebec program at Chicoutimi, Canada is coordinated by Dr. Wendy Yoder in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages. Special scholarships may apply to help defray the costs. Please see Classical and Modern Languages website for more information.

Process for studying abroad
Visit the International Center, check out the literature in the IC library and meet with a Study Abroad advisor. With your advisor, narrow down your program options, identify potential courses, and do an estimate of program costs. Meet with your academic advisor to determine how the course or courses will fit into your U of L program of study. Submit your application for the Study Abroad program, leaving a copy for your file at the IC. Submit application for passport if you do not already have one. Submit applications for scholarships, if available. Complete the U of L paperwork for the IC files, including the Course Certification form, the financial aid consortia agreement (if needed), and the Study Abroad Cost Estimate form. Meet with a financial aid advisor to determine how to handle the cost of the program. Once accepted to your Study Abroad program, meet with a Study Abroad advisor to review remaining IC paperwork.
Forms & Instructions (available online)
- Course Certification, Degree Applicability, & Good Standing Certifications This form is completed in consultation with the student's Academic Advisor (transfer credit) in the department or departments from which credit is sought. A section must also be completed by the student's major area of study advisor or the appropriate Academic Advisor of the student's college or school.
- Student Release of Information Most program hosts, including U of L, require that the certifying officer at the International Center review the student's conduct records. This form provides the International Center with student's permission to gather this and other pertinent information in support of their application to do a study abroad.
- Study Abroad Budget & Planning This form is to help students create a realistic budget for their program abroad. Once this is completed, they are advised to meet with a Financial Aid officer to identify potential funding supports.
- Student Financial Aid Agreement This form is an agreement between the students and the U of L Financial Aid office. As the students have received funding for their programs abroad through U of L, they agree to participate fully in the academic program abroad for which they have received the funds.
- Tuition Remission This form is available only to students in programs for which there is tuition remission. These are the summer Montpellier, France Work Exchange, the U of L China program, the U of L program in Trinidad & Tobago, and the CCSA summer programs. Students seeking remission must first register for the U of L course(s) and then submit a confirmation of registration to the International Center.
- Emergency Information This form provides key emergency contact information for the students, including local contacts in the U.S. and contact information for the students abroad during the program.
- Student Release and Assumption of Risk This form confirms the students' understanding of their responsibilities for Study Abroad. The Study Abroad advisors do their utmost to work with the students to identify academically sound and safe programs abroad. However, neither the International Center nor the University can be responsible for all eventualities. Therefore, the students acknowledge their responsibility to adhere to program requirements and standards.
- Student Conduct Agreement The students participating in Study Abroad programs serve as informal ‘ambassadors’ of U of L and their country when abroad. All students are expected to abide by the code of conduct established by U of L, as well as to adhere to the standards of conduct and other regulations of their Study Abroad program or host. This includes the laws of their host country. All students are required to read, discuss, and sign this document as part of the student advising process.
- International Student ID Cards All students traveling abroad must have an International Student ID Card (ISIC). For information on obtaining an ISIC, please visit the International ID Cards webpage.
