Structure of Academic Advising


Each of the undergraduate units at UofL offers quality academic advising services and has its own system for advising. Some units advise by appointment, and other units have "walk-in" advising times. In some units, students are assigned to a professional academic advisor, while in others units, students meet with both a professional academic advisor and a faculty advisor. To learn how your enrollment unit is structured, see the information below:

College of Arts & Sciences (freshman/sophomore)

Advising is required if the student has less than 24 credit hours. Depending on the time of year, advising can occur on a walk-in basis or by appointment.  No A faculty advisor is not assigned until a major is declared.
College of Arts & Sciences (junior/senior) Advising is required for students who have not declared a major. Depending on the time of year, advising can occur on a walk-in basis or by appointment.   No A faculty advisor is not assigned until a major is declared.
University Honors Program Advising is required for students with less than 24 credit hours or for students who have not declared a major. An appointment is required during pre-registration and registration periods. Walk-in advising is available at all other times.  No  No
College of Business Advising is required if the student has less than 24 credit hours. Depending on the time of year, advising can occur on a walk-in basis or by appointment. Please call 852-7439 for further information. Students are assigned to a professional advisor according to the major selected.  No
 School of Dentistry Advising is required if the student has less than 30 credit hours. Advising is available on a walk-in basis and by appointment.  Yes  No
College of Education & Human Development Advising is required if the student has less than 30 credit hours or if the student is in probationary status. Advising is available on a walk-in basis and by appointment. Freshman and sophomores are assigned a professional advisor. Juniors and seniors are assigned a faculty advisor.
Speed School of Engineering Advising is required for students who have less than 60 program hours. An appointment is required during pre-registration and registration periods. Walk-in advising is available at all other times  Yes A faculty advisor is assigned after the student is admitted to the department.
 School of Music Advising is required for freshman and sophomores. An advising appointment is required. Please call 852-0517. Freshman and sophomores are assigned a professional advisor.  No
 School of Nursing Advising is required if the student has less than 30 credit hours; has been admitted in conditional status; is on academic warning or probation; or is a first semester transfer student. Appointments are preferred. Walk-ins may be available. Advisors are located on HSC M-F and Belknap campus T-F. Professional advisors are assigned according to program plan and/or the student's last name. Only graduate students are assigned a faculty advisor.
Kent School of Social Work  Advising is required for all BSW students. Appointments are preferred. Walk-ins may be available. Please call 852-3935.  Yes  No
