Workshop Description for AP Biology APSI as presented by Denise M. Green

The Biology APSI will focus on providing participants will tools to develop and conduct a college level biology course that meets the current AP Biology Curriculum framework. This will include a review of the curriculum framework and its application to preparation of exam questions.  There will be time dedicated to review of a practice AP Biology exam and grading the current free response questions.

Participants will complete at least one lab that is representative from each Big Idea and will evaluate several additional labs.  The difference between the various levels of inquiry investigation will be reviewed and suggestions made on how to prepare student for open inquiry.

Strategies for teaching AP Biology will be explored with the review of Case Studies, HHMI materials, and other modeling activities.  Participants will have an opportunity to share their best practices and discuss the skills and knowledge that are necessary for a successful AP course.

Time will be dedicated to development of a syllabus that meets the needs of the AP participants.  Examination of several example syllabi will help direct the development of a unique syllabus.

Learning Outcomes

Teachers will develop a working understanding of the AP Biology Curriculum in order to identify the skills and concepts necessary for success on the AP Biology Exam.  This same level of understanding will be directed towards learning how to develop a course syllabus.

Participants will learn how to prepare and implement College Board Inquiry Lab investigations for each of the four Big Ideas.  Training will provide suggestions for each level of inquiry from confirmation to open.

Participants will understand how the AP Exam is developed and graded and will be able to evaluate Test Banks to determine if they are appropriate for preparing students for the AP exam.

Participants will be able to evaluate activities and models to determine if they will help develop skills that are required for success in AP Biology.

Consultant Bio

Denise Green currently is in her 20th year of teaching Honors and AP Biology at Mills E. Godwin High School in Henrico, Virginia.  She holds a BS from the University of Virginia and a MS in Biology from the University of Richmond.   Denise has conducted one-day workshops and summer institutes in Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, North Carolina, Texas, and Virginia.  She also serves as a NMSI Consultant.  She has been a member of the AP Biology Outside Item Writing committee since 2010.  When not working, Denise enjoys water activities and being with her family.
