It’s totally ‘80s with big hair, neon colors, and Ray-Bans at the Song, Skit, and Dance Competition for SROW 2010! Make sure you read the information on the registration form and submit it by February 5, 2010!

Registration Deadline

February 5, 2010. The registration form is below, (the SROW planning committee has the right to refuse any submission that we consider offensive or unethical.) All orientation teams are encouraged to participate in this annual SROW tradition, and to plan ahead to ensure a successful performance.

Technical Information

Entrance/Exit: Performers will enter from stage right & exit from stage left.

Judging Criteria

Performance will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Originality and creativity
  • Appropriateness: Profanity and other vulgar acts will not be tolerated and if used will result in disqualification.
  • Entertainment value: Audience appeal, overall quality of performance, and theme development.
  • Evidence of teamwork: Involvement of all group members.
  • Information about your school’s orientation program: Does the performance introduce the audience to your school/orientation program?
  • School spirit/enthusiasm: Ability to maintain a high level of energy and excitement throughout the performance.
  • Choreography (Dance Competition): Defined as any movement designed to enhance the presentation.
  • Musical and theatrical quality (Song & Skit Competition): Quality of sound and diction.

A Word to the Orientation Professionals

Once again, this year’s competition will allow teams to choose what category they would like to be judged on during this annual SROW tradition: 1.Skit, 2.Song, or 3. Choreographed Dance. Institutions can develop SROW performances in these categories and they may also be used as summer performances.

Performance Guidelines

The annual Skit, Song, and Dance Competition offers a unique opportunity for you to enhance teamwork, showcase your talent, and share information about your orientation program. The competition is an annual event at SROW and we want your team to be a part of the show. As indicated above, you will choose whether you want your performance to be judged as a skit, song, or dance- remember that each institution can only participate in one category. For clarification:

  • Judges will score Skit performances on the basis of their theatrical quality. While they may be included, song and dance elements will not be judged for performances entered in this competition.
  • Judges will score Song performances largely on the merits of their song selection, rewritten lyrics and their connection to orientation/their institution, etc. While it may be included, on-stage choreography will not be judged for performances entered in this competition.
  • Judges will score Dance performances largely on the merits of their choreography as a whole. While it must be included, rewritten lyrics, voiceovers, etc. will not be judged for performances entered in this competition. However, you must include information about your school, and/or orientation program in your lyrics.

Entertainment Value

All performances should include information about your school and/or orientation program. Performances should provide entertainment for conference participants and should demonstrate creativity, effort, school spirit, and a specific theme (this theme does not have to be the SROW 2010 theme). All performances must meet the standards set by the National Orientation Directors Association. Both the language and the content must be appropriate and in good taste, and should be suitable for use in your orientation program.

Order of Performance

Performance order will be set at random- institutions will be given the order of the performances at the Skit, Song, and Dance meeting on Friday at 4:30 pm.

Length of Performance

The Skit, Song, and Dance Competition is timed, and points will be deducted from teams that exceed the time limit. Time officially begins 1) when the music begins, or 2) when the first participant steps on the stage. Time stops when the last participant has left the stage. There is no extra time for prop setup and breakdown- if your institution chooses to use props, they must be set up and broken down within the time limit. If you exceed the time limit by 30 seconds or more, you will be disqualified.

Skit Competition: 5 minute time limit
Song and Dance Competition: 4 minute time limit

Penalties

1-10 seconds over = 10 point deduction
11-20 seconds over = 20 point deduction
21-29 seconds over = 30 point deduction
> 30 seconds over = Automatic disqualification

Props

All props must be freestanding, and must be removed from the stage immediately after your performance. For safety’s sake, groups may not throw items of any kind into the audience. Additionally, performers cannot leap or jump from the stage – stairs must be used for entering or exiting the stage. Any violation of these requirements will result in immediate disqualification.

Music/Voice-over Tapes

Performing groups may bring a CD to accompany their performance- cassette tapes will not be accepted. Pre-recorded voices for skit, song, and dance competitions are acceptable. All CD’s must be clearly labeled with the name of the institution and turned in at the competition meeting on Friday at 4:30 pm. CDs must contain only the music/voice tracks to be used- this will eliminate any confusion during the actual performance. Each performing group will be required to designate a person to assist the sound technician to ensure that the music/voice tracks begin and end at the correct time during the performance. CDs will be returned to the designated assistant immediately following your institution’s performance.

Sportsmanship

In the spirit of SROW and sportsmanship, we ask that each participating institution stay for all performances and show respect for other groups. Points will be deducted from your team’s score if you leave early or fail to show good sportsmanship to other institutions.
