Terms and conditions of employment

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: (all dates are tentative and may be subject to change)

Length of the Position   Although orientation does not occur until the summer, there are many events and training experiences during the spring semester that you are required to attend.  The live-in period of this position begins May 7 and ends the second week of July 2012.  SOSers are also required to work transfer orientation sessions, Welcome Weekend events, Admitted Student Day and Accolade. In the Spring 2012 semester SOSers are required to volunteer 2 hours weekly (in a block) in the New Student Programs office and complete a total of 10 service hours as part of a team with a partnering community organzation. 

Required Commitments SOSers selected for the 2012 summer will be responsible for the following commitments:

Welcome Lunch – Your first official event as an SOSer is Monday, December  5, 12 - 1 p.m. – come meet your new teammates.

  1. SOSer Dinner – Each year we officially kick-off the semester with a dinner.  Date is to be determined. 
  2. SROW Retreat – To get to know each other better before we attend the conference (see below), we will have an overnight retreat.  Date is January 20-21, 2012. 
  3. SROW – This orientation conference that meets March 9-11, 2012 is a great way to get fresh ideas for our orientation program.  Attendance is mandatory (unless given permission by New Student and Campus Visit Program Office- permission will be given on a case by case basis). All registration, hotel, and most food costs will be covered by Orientation. SROW 2012 will be in Charlotte, NC at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. You are expected to be available March 8-11. 
  4. Skit Practice –In order to prepare for Orientation, we will have mandatory skit practice every Tuesday and Thursday from 4-5 p.m. beginning January 12.  (Keep this in mind when building your class schedule) 
  5. Orientation Class - You will be required to enroll in ECPY 355: Developing Campus Leadership for the Spring 2012 semester. It is a 3 credit hour course.
  6. Advisor Luncheon- This is a great opportunity to meet the academic advisors that you will work with during the summer.  This date is TBA. 
  7. Training Weeks – Training weeks will be held Sunday, May 7 –  Wednesday, May 23.  Training weeks include evenings and will include one overnight retreat.
  8. Miller Hall - All staff members are required to stay overnight in Miller Hall during training week and the evenings before and during Orientation sessions. 
  9. Orientation Sessions – Each SOSer will be required to work all freshman orientation dates and some transfer orientation sessions. (See Important Dates)
  10. Welcome Week – SOSers are required to work several of the events for this program which occurs the 4-5 days before classes begin.  Programs are held Wednesday through Sunday, time TBA.

Time Off in the Summer- SOSers will be given a schedule of assigned tasks, but are expected to be available at all times during orientation. Any time-off must be discussed with Alyssa and Toree.

Outside Employment- Unless arrangements are made ahead of time, no other employment is allowed that would conflict with any orientation commitments.

Academic Work - You cannot take courses during Summer session 1 or 2.

Compensation and Benefits

1.    Each SOSer will be paid on a monthly basis. Over the course of the summer, you will make $1500.00, before taxes and appropriate deductions.

2.    All meals will be provided during Orientation sessions and training

3.    Meal stipend will be provided for the summer

4.    Double Room on-campus will be provided during training and Orientation sessions

5.    All expenses paid to Southern Regional Orientation Workshop excluding some meals

6.    Staff Shirts will be provided

7.    Significant leadership experience

8.    Opportunity for developing professional relationships with faculty, staff and students

9.    Surprise goodies along the way!
