HUMANA PROVIDER UPDATE

We are pleased to announce the University of Louisville and University Hospital have signed an agreement for physician services with University Physicians Associates, the umbrella group which represents the University of Louisville faculty physicians.

Effective immediately the agreement provides for employees on all UofL and University Hospital health plans to see UofL physicians on an in-network basis.  This agreement is valid through the end of the calendar year 2008.  UofL Human Resources and University Hospital Human Resources are working together with University Physicians Associates to develop additional health plan options, beyond this calendar year, which  will ensure our health plan participants’ ability to maintain their doctor-patient relationship with their UofL physician(s) regardless of changes to the health plan’s third party administrator’s physicians networks.

Both employers chose to contract directly with the UofL doctors for the current health plans, which are administered by Humana, because UofL Physicians’ contractual relationship with Humana came to an end approximately Jan. 1, 2008.  As of that date, the majority of UofL Physicians have been out-of-network with Humana, which has created a hardship for many affected health plan participants. 

UPA is Louisville’s largest multi-specialty physician practice, and is made up of more than 460 healthcare professionals. Most of UofL physicians are specialists, but many practice internal and family medicine. UofL physicians are also professors in their respective fields at the University of Louisville, ensuring that patients are treated by the very professionals who are charged with bringing the most up-to-date care to their patients. UofL and University Hospital administration believe it is important for employees to have access to this expertise without having to pay out-of-network rates.
