Urinetown: The Musical

The Play

“Coincidentally, just before rehearsals began for the production, New York City had a big scare one day when a horrible smell was detected throughout Manhattan. It was reported on the national news as ‘the big stink.’ Nobody seemed to be able to determine the cause. If you’ll notice, this show takes place “Sometime after the stink years.” And the Chinese government recently announced a program to sell reconstituted urine as drinking water. Urinetown is a wonderfully funny, clever, insightful show, but it is a SATIRE... let’s hope it stays that way." – Jim Hesselman

“Urinetown: The Musical” will close the University of Louisville Theatre Program’s spring season April 18-22.

The play, which has won three Tony Awards, three Outer Circle Critics' Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards and two Obie Awards, will be staged at UofL’s Playhouse Theatre at Cardinal Avenue between Second and Third streets.

Performan ces will begin at 8 p.m. April 18, 19, 20 and 22. There will be 3 p.m. performances April 21 and 22.

Set in a city of the future, “Urinetown” is the satirical story of a hero who rises to defend the poor and liberate the pay, corporate-owned potties after the government bans private facilities during a severe water shortage.

Hesselman, an actor, director and writer, earned his master of fine arts degree from UofL in 1992. He runs Theatre Island Productions and has acted in, written or directed more than 100 Derby Dinner Playhouse productions.

He also performed with the national tour of “Anything Goes” and the 20 th anniversary tour of the original “Nunsense.”

Ticket prices are $10 for the general public, $9 for UofL employees and senior citizens and $7 for students. Call the box office at 502-852-6814 for reservations or group ticket prices.

The UofL Playhouse
1911 S. 3rd Street
Louisville , KY 40208

Built in 1874, the current Playhouse originally served as a small, interdenominational chapel for a local orphanage. In 1923, the University of Louisville acquired the land on which the chapel stood, converted the structure into a theatre, and designated it a "temporary building" for use until a permanent theatre could be erected.

In 1977, the Playhouse was dismantled to make room for the construction of the William F. Ekstrom Library and Learning Resources Center. The building was systematically taken apart and safely put into storage.

Rebuilt in 1980 on the traffic island between 2nd and 3rd streets at Cardinal Ave., the Playhouse was expanded to include a basement and full-working scene shop. It is also the location of the offices of the Technical Director and Scene Shop Foreman.

The Playhouse is located on the corner of Cardinal Blvd. & 3rd Street.  Metered street parking is available along 3rd Street and Cardinal Blvd. Free parking in the university parking lots located on 3rd St. is free after 7:30 p.m. weekdays and all day on weekends.
