Notes
These notes are intended to provide you with a single reference to technicalities in the degree requirements. The page numbers refer topages in the 2003-2004 Undergraduate Catalog. If you don’t already have a copy of the Catalogue that contains the degree program you intend to follow, you should obtain one from the Registrar’s Office as soon as possible. Remember, that catalogue is your “contract” with the University.
Section A: DEGREE PROGRAM
-
Application for Major (p. 39)
-
Students can apply for a major in Theatre Arts at any time. The department
does not have any admission requirements for the major.
-
Students can fill out an application for major on-line. (On UofL's web page,
go to Current Students, On-Line Services, scroll down to the College of Arts
and Sciences, click on Advising Center.)

General Education Requirements (pp. 20-22)
-
The College expects the 34-hour General Education requirements to be completed
during your first two years in school. If you enroll for the “typical” 15 hours
each semester, you’ll accumulate 60 hours in your first two years, so you’ll have
26 hours available for theatre courses and electives.
-
The general education requirements are university-wide and can be found in the
general information section of the Undergraduate Catalog.
-
The Provost's Office maintains an updated list of the general education
requirements at their web site. It can also be accessed at the Advising
Center's web site.
-
Students who began their studies at UofL before Fall 2001 may choose to follow
the general education requirements in place at the time they first enrolled
provided they are not away from the University for two or more years. (See
Catalog Year.) A list of the pre-Fall 2001 general education requirements can
be found at the Advising Center web site.

WR Requirements (p. 40)
-
The General Education “Written Communication” requirement is generally met
by passing ENGL 101-102. Other options are available for the well-prepared
student. In addition, all students are required to complete two courses
designated as “WR” courses.

-
If you complete all of the specified required Theatre Arts courses, you will
wind up with more than double the required number of WR credits. These WR
Theatre Arts classes are in Theatre History & Literature and African American
Theatre. If you make a significant number of substitutions against these
requirements, you’ll still need to be sure that you complete the WR requirement.

Completing the Department’s AATP requirement should satisfy this requirement,
unless you go out of your way to select or substitute AATP courses that
haven’t been approved for this area.

-
Specific Requirements in Theatre Arts (p. 177)
-
Academic Core
You must complete the specified four courses in this area unless your advisor approves the substitution of a course that covers comparable material. For the forseeable future, these courses will be offered on a rotating basis, one course each semester. Thus, it will take two academic years to complete this requirement, and if you miss one of the courses, it won’t be available again for two years. You should plan accordingly.
-
Performance Core
This area now requires the first year of Acting courses, plus one elective course. Students who complete TA 322, Acting the Black Experience may use that course to satisfy requirements in the Performance area and the AATP area. If you choose this option, you will generate an additional “Theatre Elective” course; that is, you’ll still need a full 60 hours in theatre courses. (See Note B6, below.)
-
Production Core
This area now requires the year of Stagecraft courses, plus one of the Introductory courses to the Design disciplines.
-
AATP Core
This area now requires the two courses identified on p. 1, plus one of two specified elective courses.
-
Performance/Production Projects
All theatre majors are required to work on six productions as part of their studies; this requirement is enforced using the TA 350 course number and requirement. (Exception: stage managing generates one full credit hour of TA 350, thus reducing the total nuymber of productions required.)
Students are expected to experience a variety of theatre skills in addressing this requirement. No more than one credit hour in any single aspect of theatre (e.g., acting, scenery, stage managing, etc.) may be applied toward this requirement.
Students may enroll for two “sections” of TA 350 in a single semester; under extraordinary circumstances, it may be possible to enroll for three sections in one semester, but this is not encouraged.
Refer to the TA 350 Policy for details on how this course is organized and how it functions during the semester.

Maximum Hours in Major (p. 39)
-
No more than 60 hours in the major department may be applied toward the B.S.
degree. (For students finishing the old B.A. program, no more than 40 hours in
the major department may apply toward the degree.)
-
Surplus hours in the major department will add to the minimum hours required
for graduation. For example, a student pursuing the B.S. in Theatre Arts who
has completed 65 hours in Theatre Arts will need 121 + 5, or 126 hours to
graduate.

No more than 60 hours in the major department may be applied toward the B.S.
degree. (For students finishing the old B.A. program, no more than 40 hours in
the major department may apply toward the degree.)
-
Upper Level Hours (p. 39)
-
At least 50 hours are required at the 300-level or above. The B.S. program
specifies 45 300-level hours in Theatre Arts courses and an additional 21
300-level hours in Humanities and the Sciences. Unless you have a large number
of lower-level transfer hours, or you make a large number of course
substitutions, this requirement is met automatically.

-
Division of Humanities
-
You must complete one course numbered HUM 591-596. Several sections are
offered each semester (including the summer), so you should be able to select
a course or a teacher you prefer.
-
You must complete four courses, numbered 300-599, offered by the Division of
Humanities or by one of its non-theatre departments (English, Philosophy, Art
History, Music History, Languages).
-
You should consider two possible uses for this requirement: you could either
broaden your studies by taking a wide variety of Humanities courses, or you
could focus on supplementing your theatre studies by selecting four
theatre-related Humanities courses.
-
Popular choices for theatre-related Humanities courses include:
- HUM 304, Culture of the Modern Period
- HUM 305, American Culture
- HUM 323, Modern Drama
- HUM 324, Introduction to Film Studies
- HUM 325, Survey of Film and Culture
- HUM 326, Studies in Film and Culture
- HUM 368, Theories of Theatrical Performance
- HUM 369, Asian Theatre
- HUM 550, Internship in Arts and Humanities
- ENGL 333, Shakespeare
- ENGL 334, Shakespeare
- PHIL 331, Philosophy of the Arts
- PHIL 531, Aesthetics
- ARTH: a wide variety of topics of special interest to design students
- NOTE: MUSH 212, History of Rock and Roll is extremely popular as a General Education “Arts” course, but it fills quickly.
- MUSH 301, Fundamentals of Music for Nonmajors
- MUSH 309, Music in the Theatre
- FREN 325, French Theatre Practicum (NOTE: stringent prerequisite, or faculty consent)

Courses Outside the Humanities Division
-
You must complete any two courses numbered 300-599 taught by any department
in the Social Science or Natural Science Divisions; that is, by any department
other than those named in Note 9. You may choose two courses taught by a single
department; or one course each taught by two different departments, either in
one of the Divisions or in both.
-
You must complete two Physical Education Activities. We strongly recommend
selecting Activities that can relate directly to theatre training. Such
Activities include:
- HPES 110, Physical Fitness Conditioning
- HPES 116, Introduction to Yoga
- HPES 117, Intermediate Yoga
- HPES 118, Beginning Martial Arts
- HPES 119, Intermediate Martial Arts
- HPES 127, Beginning Fencing
- HPES 162, Beginning Modern Dance

one of the Divisions or in both.
-
Foreign Language Requirement (pp. 34-35 and 41)
-
The B.S. in Theatre Arts does not require foreign language.
- If you choose to study a foreign language, only 12 hours of beginning and intermediate language courses in the same language can apply toward the degree. For example, if a student takes French 121 and then later takes French 141 and 142, the student will need 4 additional hours to graduate.
