Thanks to the generosity of Mary Craik, a Louisville artist and feminist activist, the Mary Craik Scholarships for Women Students are offered every spring to students pursuing degrees (graduate and undergraduate) at the University of Louisville. In order to be eligible for a scholarship, women students must:
- be pursuing a degree at UofL
- have limited financial resources, based on the UofL Office of Financial Aid's review of a current FAFSA
- have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 at UofL
- have completed at least 30 undergraduate hours at UofL as of December 2004 (if an undergraduate applicant)
- have demonstrated a commitment to the advancement of women.
Preference will be given to qualfied applicants who also meet any of the following criteria:
- live in Louisville's West End
- are single parents
- are full-time students
- or are Women's & Gender Studies majors, minors, or M.A. students.
To apply for a scholarship, please submit a completed application form, a one-page statement about your background and commitment to the advancement of women, and an informal UofL transcript. Your statement must contain specific examples of how you have been active on behalf of women or involved in women's issues.
The Carolyn Krause Maddox Prize in Women's & Gender Studies
The UofL Department of Women's & Gender Studies announces the sixth annual Carolyn Krause Maddox Prize. Thanks to a generous donation from Eleanor and Bob Maddox, one undergraduate and one graduate student will be awarded $200 in case for the best papers on a topic in Women's & Gender Studies.
Students from any discipline are invited to submit papers on topics related to women or gender. An interdisciplinary committee of WGS faculty will review all submissions and make award decisions. The winners will receive their prizes and present their papers at a colloquium during Women's History Month in March. Previous winners of this prize may not compete again.
Mary K. Bonsteel Tachau Scholarship for Graduate Work in Women's & Gender Studies
For academic year 2006-2007, WGS will award a limited number of scholarships (up to $1000) for students admitted into the M.A. program. Scholarships will be awarded by the Graduate Admission Committee of WGS based on a combination of merit and need. The Committee will consider all admission materials to determine merit and will rely on the UofL Office of Financial Aid to determine need. Scholarships are not renewable.
To apply for a scholarship, you must:
- be accepted for admission to the UofL Women’s & Gender Studies M.A. program
- have a FAFSA on file with the UofL Office of Financial Aid
- be enrolled in WGST courses for at least half of your course hours
- complete an application form (available in the WGS office, or you may request that we mail you a form)
The deadline for scholarship applications is July 28, 2006. Your application materials must be complete and your FAFSA on file with the UofL Office of Financial Aid in order to be considered for this scholarship.
