According to the Department of Justice's 2005 National Gang Threat Assessment, there are at least 21,500 gangs and more than 731,000 active gang members. Street gangs encompass all fabrics
of our communities from rural areas to the suburban and
urban areas of the United States. Threfore, it is crucial for our police officers and school administrators to be able to identify the gang members and gang activity in our communities so that gang prevention or intervention may occur.
This two-day semianr is a must attend for both
public safety officers and school administrators. This course will assist police officers by allowing them to more easily identify gang members and gang activity while conducting traffic stops, field interviews, or
while conducting any law enforcement investigation that may
include an element of street gang activity. This course will also assist school administrators and school resource officers to identify gangs by providing warning signs of youth involved in gangs and why youth join gangs.
The participants will discuss in class some
characteristics of a street gang member and signs and symbols of
nationally known street gangs. Participants will also be
conducting a site visit in the Metro Louisville area for a
practical exercise. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothes.
If available, participants are encouraged to bring a digital
