The Department of English of the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Louisville offers a full-time program of post-secondary intensive English for international students who expect to enroll in an academic program at an American college or university. We accept applications from students who have completed secondary school, have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 (a grade of C) and who have had at least one semester of English.

We review applications and admit qualified students throughout the year for the fall and spring semesters.  During the semester, students attend classes for 20 hours a week (Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.) in reading, vocabulary, writing, structure, and listening/speaking.

We also offer Communication in English (CIE), a part-time evening class. CIE is designed to help non-native speakers of English (intermediate to advanced proficiency) become more effective communicators. Classroom activities are designed to give participants the opportunity to improve conversational and written fluency and to practice the language needed in professional interactions such as discussions and presentations.

Applications for both the full-time IESL program and the evening class are accepted throughout the year for enrollment according to the IESL program schedule.

We are located in the basement of Gardiner Hall, Room 10. For more information, please contact Barbara Brown or Nancy Henry at (502) 852-5901, or email our program at iesl@louisville.edu.  For a campus map to Gardiner Hall, click here.
