Please contact nichole.burruss@lousiville.edu with questions and submissions.

Computer TECHniques

Copier

The University Honors Program recently added user account passcodes to the copier housed at the Overseers Honors House. Copies still cost $.05 a copy -- payable at the front desk -- but students are now required to input 123 before making copies. Honors will be closely monitoring the amount of copies made, and how much paper is used, in order to determine if copier usage and payments made coincide. If not, we may be forced to take copier privileges away.

Paper
Paper is currently available at the front desk, 25 sheets for $.25. However, we've noticed that we've had to bring more paper over since school began, but we aren't seeing an increase in the amount of money we are receiving. If this doesn't change, we will no longer provide paper to students; they will need to provide their own to use our printing and copying services.

Advising Sign-ups
Time to plan for spring 2008 courses

Advising appointments will begin Today, Monday, Sept. 17, 2007. If you have yet to secure an appointment, you need to stop by the Etscorn Honors Center as soon as possible to schedule your appointment with Dr. Richardson, Melissa Stordeur, Luke Buckman or Tony Robinson.

Who needs to see an Honors advisor? If you are an A&S major who has less than 30 hours; if you wish to take an Honors course, regardless of the school or college you are enrolled in; or just want guidance about your collegiate career, you'll want to stop by for an appointment. Appointments generally take 30 minutes. We ask that you print your name and vital information on the appointment sign-up form so that we can contact you easily, should we need to reschedule, and in order to retrieve your file quickly. Important: non-A&S majors will also need to make advising appointments with their home colleges (Business, Education, Nursing, Music, Speed, Dental Hygiene).

Make sure you review the schedule of courses for spring 2008 before you come to your appointment. As descriptions become available for spring Honors courses, they will be made available on our website. By reviewing these websites, you will help make the most of your time with your advisor.

Priority registration is scheduled for Oct. 29, 2007.

Aaron Olsen pilots his “Urban Waters” seminar classmates in a canoe down Beargrass Creek during a class outing.

The University Honors Program Explores Louisville’s Urban Streams

By Dr. David Wicks

U of L Honors Course “Urban Waters” paddled Harrods Creek on Saturday Sept. 8, 2007. The course explores the threats to water quality that our local streams and rivers face. Early Saturday morning the class launched the canoes from Captain’s Quarters and paddled up Harrods Creek to the first riffle, about 4.5 miles. Harrods Creek has as it’s headwaters in Henry County, then flows though Oldham County, and then eastern Jefferson County. Its confluence with the Ohio River is about 9 miles upstream from Louisville’s waterfront park. After paddling for about 2 hours, we landed the boats on a rocky beach, had lunch, conducted macro invertebrate studies and chemical analysis of the water using protocols approved by the Kentucky Division of Water and the Salt River Watershed Watch

The 30 foot voyageur canoe with the U.S. flag is being captained by U of L honors student Aaron Olson, while the voyageur canoe with the Kentucky Flag is being captained by Kevin Koeninger. During the upcoming semester the class will explore Urban Water while paddling on Beargrass Creek, the Salt River, Floyds Fork and the Ohio River. During the week, the class focuses on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, EPA’s, Watershed Academy. The Watershed Academy is a set of self-paced training modules that represents a basic but broad introduction to watershed management.  At the end of the course successful students will be awarded with American Canoe Association’s certificate and an EPA certificate for participation in the Watershed Academy.

The Urban Waters Honors seminar class travels to a site to collect water samples.

Here the class is arriving approaching an urban watershed in order to collect and test water samples as a part of their exploration of local urban waters.
