Tejas Shasty is a Political Science and Philosophy double major from Ashland, Kentucky. He is also a graduate of Raceland High school and a McConnell scholar in his second year at U of L. Tejas says that his favorite U of L sport is women’s soccer, “because they’re excellent!” When he is not looking forward to the weekend Tejas enjoys reading, volunteering at the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen and eating Thai food. Some interesting things that people may not know about him is that he speaks two languages: Tamil and English. If he had to describe himself in one word it would be ineffable. He loves honors seminars and his favorite book is Catch 22 by Joseph Heller. A strange but not embarrassing habit of his is that he brushes his teeth in the shower while he shaves at the same time. My what a talent that is! His words of advice to his peers, “Hang in there.” If you see Tejas around be sure to ask him why Jamie Giles makes him smile or how he manages to wear shorts and flip flops when it’s freezing outside? Whatever you ask be sure to stop and spend some face time with him!
Derek Jones is a Junior political science and economics major from Paintsville, Kentucky. He is a graduate of Johnson Central and he enjoys watching college basketball, but for fear of his physical safety and mental health I shall not mention the team’s name. Derek is a Harlan and McConnell Scholar. He also participates in the Overseers mentoring program, intramural sports and CRASH Bible study. He enjoys reading, video games and church service. His favorite food is pizza and he enjoys smiling at the everyday things in life. An interesting thing about him that you may not know is that he is double jointed and his favorite book is Crime and Punishment. If he had to describe himself in one word it would be funny. Some words of advice he offers to his peers are, “don’t put off studying.” One thing he would like to do to make the world a better place is to start a non-profit organization to help people. Next time you see Derek be sure to ask him about separation anxiety and food consumption, or just say hi, but be sure to spend some face time with him.
