HALLOWEEN PARTY Lecture Series from the Honors Student Council (HSC) HSC’s Lecture Series is going well. There have been three lectures so far, by Dr. Sonya Jones (UK), Dr. Keith Mountain (U of L) and Dr. Frank Nuessel (U of L). The topics have varied widely in an attempt to offer Honors students a short foray into a field of interest that they might not have time to peruse otherwise. Turnout has been good, but can always be improved by your presence. These activities are provided for YOUR intellectual and social life. They only matter if they matter to you. The next lecture is by Dr. Mark Blum of the history department at U of L. Blum will be speaking on Oct. 25 at 4 p.m. about "Discerning the Lived Experience of History: Personal Time and Personal Understanding of the Historical Event.” This lecture will be held in Ekstrom Library, rm. 254 (LIC). Please come, meet faculty up close and informally, talk to other Honors students and think about something with the pleasure that you don't have any homework or expectations attached to it!

Got Research? U of L undergraduate researchers are sought to present research papers to Kentucky legislators at Posters-at-the-Capitol 2007 held in the state capitol building in Frankfort on Feb. 15, 2007, during the legislative session. Research, scholarly and creative accomplishments provide legislators a chance to better understand the importance of faculty-mentored undergraduate scholarship. Online information is available at Posters-at-the-Capitol 2007. The abstract submission deadline is Oct. 25, 2006. Each year 14 U of L undergraduates present in the capitol. Please call (270) 809-3192 or e-mail urse@murrystate.edu with questions. Now Taking Submissions for: This is a new initiative from HSC intended to accommodate new students at our school, especially those who may be new to the city of Louisville. This guidebook will be filled with useful indices of items of interest to the (Honors) college student at U of L, including restaurants, music stores, live shows, study spots, parks, outdoor activities, newspapers, festivals, shopping, freebies, TARC schedules and directions to various points of interest, radio stations etc. -- pretty much anything related to what is great about Louisville. The final form of the guidebook is undecided, but we hope to have a community webpage on which anyone can post. If you are a native Louisvillian or an upperclassman with useful advice, tips, cool places to know about, etc., please submit your picks with a paragraph highlighting a store, event, organization or place. Please e-mail submissions to Clare Gervasi Kalb at cfgerv01@louisville.edu. If you don’t want to write a paragraph, just submit a suggestion and contact information.
Even the front desk of the Honors Center can be a canvas for artwork! If you have art you'd like us to feature, please send it along to us. Calling all Honors Students! The Current is now taking art submissions. Art submissions can be of any medium, but a picture will need to be taken in order to include the work in The Current. All submissions must be original and are subject to content review by the Honors staff. Share your talent, share your passion, and share your hobby! Please contact nichole.burruss@lousiville.edu with questions and submissions. REMINDER REMINDER TO FRESHMEN If you are new to U of L, please remember to check your netmail e-mail account. HSC has been having difficulties contacting some of you because we either don't have your school e-mail address or because you are not responding to our e-mails. All Honors correspondence goes through this account and it is very important -- and in fact required -- that you check it. All university-related materials and correspondence will be sent to your netmail account so, unless you have properly routed your e-mail, you will be missing out. |
U of L's KHR contingent cools down after square dancing to the complementary bluegrass concert on Oct. 5, the first night of KHR. Kentucky Honors Roundtable (KHR) This fall U of L gave four different presentations and six U of L students participated. These students were Faraz Jeelani, Laura Bishop, Clare Gervasi Kalb, David Soleimani-Meigooni, Rachel Hart and Jennifer Wallin. They were accompanied by Dr. John Richardson and Tony Robinson. Students from all over the state had a chance to meet, exchange ideas and research and visit a new college campus. All of this went a long way to meeting a few of the main goals of the conference, which are fostering social and academic growth among honors students as well as giving different Honors programs a chance to develop relationships and team up. The U of L group had a fabulous time taking in the beauty of Morehead, and in absorbing the ideas and enthusiasm of other groups. Entertainment at dinner was probably the highlight. Morehead State University chose to serenade the attendees with an informative (unexpected, but amazingly fun) bluegrass performance followed by square dancing, in which all attendees participated. It was a great way to meet other students at the Roundtable, and quite a workout! Upcoming Deadlines Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans, Nov. 1, 2006 Watch for announcements in the Nov. 14 issue of The Current regarding the English-Speaking Union Summer Scholarships to Cambridge, Oxford and Edinburgh; and the Japanese Exchange and Teaching Program (JET). NEW FEATURE: Allison Martin, a chemistry and psychology double major with concentrations in biochemistry and natural sciences, has been an active presence in the Honors Program since fall of 2004. Allie thinks the best thing about U of L and Honors is the advisors. “I can talk to anyone of them about anything!” She participates in Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED), Golden Key, NSCS, Honors Student Council (HSC), Honors Volunteer Program (HVP), Society of Undergraduate Chemistry Students (SUCS) and serves as chair of the University of Louisville Dance Marathon. In her free time she enjoys going out…to the mall, to U of L games, to musicals and to eat (especially at Chili’s and Homemade Pie Kitchen). She also participates in U of L club gymnastics, browses MSN Entertainment daily and avidly watches “Desperate Housewives” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” Some things that people do not typically know about Allie are that she likes the country better than the city, thinks salsa and chips are the perfect anytime food and regularly stands on her head in her bedroom. Talk to Allie about food, or shit tzu dogs or “Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry," but be sure to stop and share some face time with her. Chris is a freshman with an intended major of economics. He is currently taking Honors Microeconomics and Business Mathematics and next semester will take "Honors World Religions," macroeconomics and political science. Chris considers Ultimate Frisbee as his favorite sport. “I like it,” he says, “because you just get out and play it. All you need is an open space and a Frisbee, and a lot of unlikely people can be really good at it.” So far he says that he has really enjoyed taking Honors classes and meeting new classmates. Chris is also a Grawemeyer Scholar. Grawemeyer Scholars are required to do a research project during their undergraduate career. He says that he is looking forward to exploring the various opportunities for undergraduate research that U of L has to offer. In his free time Chris enjoys basketball and other sports, reading books, cooking and hanging out in the lobby of the Humanities building. Some things that people do not typically know about Chris are that he knows how to juggle and he can not fall asleep while wearing socks. Look out for Chris swinging his key lanyard around campus and stop him to ask him about his research plans or why the end of “The Shawshank Redemption” makes him smile, but be sure to spend some face time with him.
