Anne and William Axton Reading SeriesThe Fall 2008 Anne and William Axton Reading Series features Brock Clarke, poet Jeffrey McDaniel and the University of Louisville’s first slam poetry event, 2008 Pulitzer Prize winner Junot Díaz, and nonfiction writer Susanna Sonnenberg. Susanna Sonnenberg is the author of Her Last Death, a memoir which Kirkus Reviews calls “a worthy companion to Simone de Beauvoir's and Vivian Gornick's explorations of the complicated mother-daughter dynamic.” Her essays have appeared in Elle, O, and in the collection About What Was Lost. (Ekstrom Library, Belknap Campus) Human Trafficking Awareness Training Marissa Castellanos, the Project Manager of Rescue and Restore Victims of Human Trafficking, will lead a workshop on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008 on Human trafficking. This training will provide information concerning victim identification strategies, screening for human trafficking, definitions and statistics, case response, and available programs and services for victims. HVP -- Honors Volunteer Program HVP is an organization that seeks to give Honors Program students opportunities to volunteer for university-sponsored activities, and in the greater Louisville community. HVP hosts a monthly lunch meeting in Etscorn Honors Center to distribute information about each month’s activities. The next HVP meeting of the fall semester will be held in the Etscorn Honors Center Classroom, Nov. 6, 2008 from 12:20- 12:50 p.m. All HVP meetings will be held the first Thursday of each month at the same time and place. Volunteers are needed to sort gifts at the Holiday Center throughout the month of December and to distribute gifts to families from Dec. 18-23. There are many wonderful ways that you can participate in the honors program beyond taking an honors class. If you enjoy giving back to your community then HVP is for you. If you want to be a part of the changes in honors then HSC is for you. The Honors program also offers student worker positions during the academic year and summer. Would you like to expand your scholastic horizons with research? If so Honors offers four wonderful opportunities a year to travel, meet other students, and earn valuable experience presenting research to your peers. Upcoming Deadlines Summer Opportunities Critical Languages Scholarships The Critical Languages Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes (CLS) program provides fully-funded seven to ten week group-based intensive language instruction and extensive cultural enrichment experiences held overseas at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels for U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master’s and Ph.D. students. More information and the online application can be found at: http://www.clscholarship.org/home.php . The national deadline is Nov. 14, 2008. Any application materials received by Dr. Patricia Condon by the campus deadline of Nov. 12, 2008 will be Fed-Ex'd at the expense of the University. Attention Juniors Summer 2009 English Speaking Union (ESU) summer scholarship applications for study in Great Britain are now available; the campus application deadline is Nov.17. The scholarship, open to juniors (junior status now with graduation no earlier than May 2010), provides tuition and room and board for one week in London followed by a three-week summer school program for studies in English literature, creative writing, history, politics and society at Oxford, Cambridge or Edinburgh for the summer of 2009.
