Interested in an Internship?

The Frankfort Legislative Internship Program was established to provide University of Louisville students with an opportunity to work and learn in a hands-on legislative environment. Each year around 30 students participate in this program to learn about leadership responsibilities as well as develop legislative process skills. The interns work in individual legislator’s offices and assist with their activities and work functions.

Interns will be appointed for the 2008 session to serve from Jan. 8 until one week after the adjournment of the legislative session (early April). Students will need to travel to Frankfort on each Tuesday and Thursday from approximately 9-5 for this time period. Any student applying for the program must be willing to commit for the entire time of the internship.

A stipend of $500 per semester will be paid to each intern. If there is any change in the amount of the stipend paid to each intern, the students will be notified prior to their arrival. The internship counts for 3 academic credit hours.

Interested students should contact the faculty representative, Dr. Jason Gainous, to get application materials. Students must register for this internship, so those who are interested should contact Dr. Gainous soon.

VISTA
Why Consider VISTA Service?

The Americorps Vista program is an excellent opportunity for a student who is interested in working within a community setting with non-profits and diverse populations. The student will assist this office in bridging community needs with support from UofL students/faculty and service learning programs. Applicants must have a 4 year college degree.  The student will receive a 10,000 stipend, health insurance, $500.00 professional development, and a $4500 educational award (towards grad school or student loans upon completion of the program). Students are now allowed to take 6 hours of grad courses each semester; however, they would be responsible for the tuition costs.

How to Apply: Go to www.nationalservice.org  You will see how to register & apply. You will need two references who have known you more than a year and they will also need to go online to provide references. Questions?  Contact Dale Tucker, dtucker@cns.gov or 502-582-6384
Corporation for National & Community Service, 600 Dr M L King Jr. Place, Room 190, Louisville, KY 40202

Students graduating in December can apply immediately. Please contact the Office of Civic Engagement, Leadership and Service or Service Learning Coordinator, Kim Shaver at 852-4333.

The office of Governor of Kentucky wants you!

The Governor’s Scholars Program is looking for bright, energetic college students to serve as resident advisors during the summer of 2008. Applicants should have completed at least one year of college and have served as resident advisors in a dormitory or had similar experience. The position will last six weeks and Resident Advisors will receive a stipend of $2,500, plus free room and board. Interested students should visit www.kygsp.org for more information and to download an application. All application materials must be postmarked on or before Jan. 11, 2008.

Coro Fellows Program in Public Affairs

Sixty-eight Fellows are chosen annually to participate in one of five center locations: Los Angeles, New York, Pittsburgh, San Francisco or St. Louis. Fellows work on individually tailored field assignments in a variety of industries, participate in examinations of various aspects of public affairs, complete group projects involving real world issues and meet community leaders- from members of Congress to CEO’s of Fortune 500 companies to grassroots community leaders.

The program runs from September, 2008 through May, 2009. Applications are due Jan. 11, 2008. Visit the Coro website for more information and an application. Contact Amira El-Ghobashy, Coordinator, Outreach and Strategic Partnerships with questions.

Honors Conference Call for Papers
Kentucky Honors Roundtable (KHR)

This year's KHR conference will be held at Eastern Kentucky University, Feb. 29- Mar. 1, 2008. If you have a current project, work it up for an individual presentation or coordinate projects for a panel discussion. Proposals for KHR must be in the Etscorn Honors Center likely Feb. 1, 2008. Remember that research presentations range from data-rich projects to those reporting on Honors-related activities such as our Overseers International Seminar trips. Too often students pass by the Honors conferences because it is hard to recognize your own work as conference material. Another misconception about conferences is that the papers are heavy and the presentations large. Not so. Presentations are given in small venues with small groups of interested and friendly listeners. Check the Etscorn Honors Center literature rack for application forms (coming soon) and return to the Etscorn Center. Please also be thinking about the regional and national conferences that are coming in the spring semester.

REMINDER
Senior Honors Project Deadline

The deadline for oral examination completion for students graduating in December is Dec. 7, 2007. If you have not yet delivered copies to your faculty supervisor to be distributed to your readers please do so as soon as possible. Students graduating in August or later please see the honors website for more information.

The Best Thing about Honors is…

If you answered "The advising!", How would you like the opportunity to honor your academic advisor? Has Luke, Melissa, Tony or Dr. Richardson impacted your academic career? If so take the time to show your advisor how important they are to you by nominating them for the 2007-2008 Provost’s Awards for Exemplary Advising. An online nomination form must be submitted by Dec. 3. In addition, 3 to 5 online letters of support must be submitted by Jan. 2, 2008. An online nomination form is available.

FACE TIME

(Facilitating the growth of a cohesive Honors community.)

Michael Razeeq is a freshman Political science major and Spanish minor. He is a graduate of Western Hills High School and a Frankfort native. When Michael isn’t hitting the books he actively participates in several organizations: Student African-American Brotherhood Secretary (www.2cusaab.org), Freshman LEAD and T.H.E.T.A. B.E.T.A.  He believes, “in being the best at whatever he does or not doing it at all because everyone's time is valuable and shouldn't be wasted.” Michael also enjoys being able to get away from everything and spending time with the people that matter. His contribution to making the world a better place is trying to impact people's lives in whatever way he can, even it's something as simple as holding a door for someone. If you he had to describe himself in one word he offered the word determined and as much as I see him rushing about campus I would have to agree. To you his peers, he offers the following words of advice, “Time flies...so enjoy it and have fun.” His favorite book is The Things They Carry by Tim O' Brien and he looks forward to reading The Audacity of Hope soon. Since free time is not something he has much of when he does have some you can find him just hanging out with friends, going to clubs and concerts, watching movies at Kurz, or sleeping. If you don’t catch him doing one of these activities be sure to spend some face time with Michael at some point.

HSC Events

10 for $10,000

On Mar. 27, 2008, the Honors Student Council is planning to have a large book sale, open to the general public, with all proceeds going to the Kosair Children's Hospital. Our goal is to raise a minimum of $10,000, but to do so we need to collect a substantial amount of books.

Although we are calling it a book sale, donations are not limited to books. We are also collecting CDs, DVDs, LPs, and other forms of media. At this point, the council members have collected a few thousand books and CDs, but we obviously need many more to meet our goal. We would be incredibly grateful if you took the time to look through your books, music, and movies in your room and home to select a few items to donate to this sale. Any amount of donations will be accepted, but the only items we are unable to accept are older textbooks. Books, or other items, can be dropped off Luke’s office at the Etscorn Honors Center with your name and e-mail address.

Show another geek your appreciation and give the gift of a Go Geek T-shirt!

HSC T-Shirts have arrived! These incredibly stylish T's are on sale in the Honors Center for $10. The front image printed on the black shirt is of the infamous white squirrel. The back of the shirt displays the following text, “Go Geek! ΗΕ Γ Honors Student Council Honors Program University of Louisville.”

Box Tops for Excellence!

Give us your Tacos, Au Gratin Potatoes and Cheerios! Honors Student Council is collecting Box Tops for Education. The collection box in located in the Overseers Honors House on the window sill of the lounge area (Behind the table where snacks are kept.) HSC will be donating the collected box tops to a local school. Please visit their website for participating products and contact Sarah Jane Bodell at with any questions.
