Honors Student Council The next general meeting for the Honors Student Council (HSC) has been scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. ATTENTION, FRESHMEN! In the spring semester there will be a position called freshman representative on the executive council of HSC. This post will be held by a freshman for one semester. This representative will be required to attend executive council meetings once a month and to represent the concerns and desires of the freshman class. Elections will be held at the next general meeting, Thursday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. If you are interested in running for this position, please e-mail your intention to run (a paragraph consisting of who you are and why you want to be freshman rep, as well as any qualifications you may have for the post) to Allie Martin (vice president of HSC) at anmart03@louisville.edu. Honors Student Council HSC will be going to Lemongrass Cafe (located on Shelbyville Road), Nov. 16, at 7 PM. If you are interested in going to LaserBlaze in the next few weeks to play laser tag with other Honors students the date will be finalized soon. This month’s movie will be Cha no Aji (The Taste of Tea.) A date has not yet been set, but students who are interested can post times on the HSC Facebook group. Completing a Senior Honors Thesis?The deadline for oral examination completion for students graduating in December is Dec. 8, 2006. If you have not yet delivered copies to your faculty supervisor to be distributed to your readers please do so as soon as possible. For students who are submitting a thesis for graduation in the spring, please note that copies of your thesis will need to be delivered to your faculty supervisor by the week of Mar. 12-16, 2007. Students graduating in August or later please see the honors website for more information. The best thing about Honors is… Would you like the opportunity to honor your academic advisor? Has Luke, Missy, Tony or Dr. Richardson impacted your academic career? If so take the time to show your advisor how important they are to you by nominating them for the 2006-2007 Provost’s Awards for Exemplary Advising. HSC Lecture Series The Honors Student Council (HSC) Lecture Series presents Dr. Jafar Hadizadeh on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at 4 p.m. in the LIC Room, on the second floor of Ekstrom Library (old wing) in the Periodicals Section. Dr. Hadizadeh is currently working with the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) on a three-year project studying rock samples from the San Andreras Fault in California in hopes of better understanding the forces behind earthquakes and someday being able to predict them. Come with an open and inquiring mind!
The next HSC lecture series event will be hosted Nov. 14. Dr. Hadizadeh will speak about earthquake prediction science. For more information, see above. MCAT-DAT Review Summer Workshop This free, four week residential intensive review program takes place July 6 through Aug. 3, 2007. Each student receives books, materials, housing and a meal stipend. JOB OPPORTUNITIES The Governor’s Scholars Program is looking for bright, energetic college students to serve as resident advisors during the summer of 2007. Applicants should have completed at least one year of college and have served as resident advisors in a dormitory or had similar experience. The position will last six weeks and Resident Advisors will receive a stipend of $2,500, plus free room and board. Interested students should visit www.kygsp.org for more information and to download an application. All application materials must be postmarked on or before Jan. 5, 2007. Coro Fellows Program in Public Affairs Coro Fellows learn about the real world in the real world - by actively questioning, interacting with diverse constituents, finding resources and creating innovative solutions to community challenges. Run for over sixty years, the Fellows Program in Public Affairs is an intensive nine-month, full-time, graduate-level program. Sixty-eight Fellows are chosen annually to participate in one of five center locations: Los Angeles, New York, Pittsburgh, San Francisco or St. Louis. Fellows work on individually tailored field assignments in a variety of industries, participate in examinations of various aspects of public affairs, complete group projects involving real world issues and meet community leaders- from members of Congress to CEO’s of Fortune 500 companies to grassroots community leaders. Ghostly treats awaited students in the Honors House! A fiendish reminder: The Current is seeking photo submissions from Honors classes and social events. Upcoming Deadlines English-Speaking Union Kentucky Branch Summer 2007 Scholarship provides tuition, room and board for three weeks of intensive study in an international program at one of the institutions listed here. Students also experience a week in London, which is intended to give students the opportunity to absorb British culture and history and acclimatize in general to being away from home. Other deadlines fast approaching… Truman Scholarship The Goldwater for Researchers David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarship (NSEP) David L. Boren Graduate Fellowship (NSEP) REMINDER Please also note that in addition to food and drink being prohibited in the Honors House computer lab, we also kindly request you refrain from eating and drinking in the Etscorn Honors Center classroom, rm. 132. Exceptions to this rule will be made for meetings, study sessions and other events, but only as approved by Dr. Richardson. Book Scholarship for Honors Students Students with demonstrable financial need and involvement in the University Honors Program may apply for an award to buy books and supplies for spring semester classes. Three awards of about $325 are available. Application consists of a letter outlining your academic program, overall financial need and projected expenses for books during spring semester. Address your letters to Dr. John Richardson, University Honors Program, and submit them no later than Tuesday, Nov. 21. These scholarships are made available by funds from MASS (Mature Adult Student Society). Attention Honors Cardinals! Each year the University of Louisville bestows an award to an outstanding senior man and woman as Mr. and Ms. Cardinal. This award is based on academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, contributions to the University, an explanation of what the "Mr. and Ms. Cardinal Award" means to the applicants, as well as an interview by a panel of judges. All interested students are urged to apply for this award. To be eligible, applicants must be an undergraduate student and have completed at least 90 credit hours. All applicants must also have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average. If you know of any student who would be a good candidate for Mr. and Miss Cardinal the applications are online. The deadline for the applications is Nov. 21, 2006.
