JOB OPPORTUNITIES Peer Advisors are needed for the 2007 summer orientation session. The Honors Program will be hiring Peer Advisors to help incoming freshmen plan and schedule their courses during the 2007 Freshman Orientation Program. This is an outstanding opportunity for Honors students to learn more about the university, discuss their experiences in the Honors Program with interested new students and parents, and earn some money along the way. The pay rate will be $9 per hour for approximately 20-25 hours each week from May to the Fourth of July. In order to apply you must have completed at least 30 hours and have a 3.35 or higher cumulative GPA. Applications are due March 30 by 4:00 p.m. Please download this application. Once you have completed it, please return it to the front desk at Etscorn Honors Center. IMPORTANT NOTE: Both the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) and Summer Term II classes will conflict with the required work schedule for a Peer Advisor. Please take this into consideration when applying for the Peer Advisor position. |

From age 80 onward, she has helped to create and shape Honors at the U of L into the incredible program you see today. The following is an excerpt from the intimate and exclusive interview with the elusive but ever-present Honors House: Me : It is a great honor [chuckle chuckle] to be granted this interview, Honors House. I know you don’t usually speak to the press. HH : Well, for the Honors Program, I’m always happy to oblige. Me : Fantastic. I wanted to start with a little bit of your history. How old are you, exactly, and what did you do before you joined the Honors family? HH : Well, a girl doesn’t like to kiss and tell, but it has been mentioned that my purpose before I became a University building was of questionable reputation, if you catch my meaning... But I don’t like to dwell on those days, although it has been interesting to watch the view from the front door change. First Street used to go right in front of me, you know! But in the 1900s, the University and the city rerouted traffic to create the campus. But in any case, as you might already know, it is almost undisputed that I am the oldest building on campus. I’ve seen it all. Me : Fascinating. So you led a full life before you came to be the Honors Building; for instance, you were the Art building for quite a while. HH : Yes I did, in fact for several years I also served as the fine arts annex for the Art Association of the Louisville School of Art. That was definitely a colorful period for me. Me : So I imagine over the years you have had many wonderful visitors. HH: Of course, far too many to mention dear, but I must say that I am partial to my regulars. I was a little disappointed to hear that when Honors came to call me home that none of the sailors that had partaken of their meals in the dinning hall that originally housed the Honors program weren’t coming here. There is just something about a man in uniform. I can’t complain though and my leather couch isn’t worn from lack of use. Me : So how has this year compared with previous year? HH : To be honest this year I have been rather lonely. A wonderful young man named Will supplied me with technological upgrades that I thought would attract my honors friends, but lo I am friendless. Me : Oh you break my heart, surely these wayward Honors students don’t know about all of the wonderful treasures you behold, or maybe they are intimidated. A confident woman has been known to scare off a man or two. HH : I just don’t know. Honors Student council has supplied wonderful goodies for my visitors to partake of, there are quiet nooks to study, a computer lab, a library of testing preparatory materials, a collection of news and pop culture periodicals and a spacious lounge area for students to discuss the world’s events. Oh how I miss being kept abreast of world events. Me : Well, I do not want to take up any more of your precious time, but I will return soon and I’ll be bringing my honors friends with me. HH : I look forward to that.
