Lydia Davis is the author of four collections of short fiction, including Varieties of Disturbance, a finalist for the 2007 National
Book Award; and a novel, The End of the Story. Her work has been
anthologized in The Best American Short Stories and The Best American
Poetry, and has been published in numerous journals ranging from The New Yorker to McSweeny’s. Davis is also the translator of avant-garde French
novels, memoirs, and volumes of literary criticism, most recently,
Swann's Way by Marcel Proust, which received the French-American
Foundation Annual Translation Prize. Davis was named a Chevalier of the
Order of Arts and Letters by the French government for her fiction and translation, and in 2003 received a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur
Fellowship. Honors Advising and Course Listing Registration in each Honors course requires prior approval from the Honors director or an Honors academic counselor. If you are an Honors student who is enrolled in a college other than Arts & Sciences (Business, Music, Speed, Education, Nursing), you will need to see your advisor in that college as well. What do you need for your advising appointment? Be sure to bring with you a tentative schedule. Although the university-wide fall 2009 course schedule won't be online until sometime in mid-March, you can get a good idea of the types of courses that will be offered by perusing the fall 2008 online course schedule. A comprehensive list of Honors course offerings is available online now. **Remember it is important to make an appointment early because classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Make the most of your time with your advisor -- read through the course listing and arrive with a tentative schedule.** For students who are submitting a thesis for graduation this spring, please note that copies of your thesis will need to be delivered to your faculty supervisor by the week of March 9-13, 2009. Oral examination must be completed and thesis approval form must be returned to the Etscorn Honors Center by March 30, 2009. Students graduating in August or later please see the honors website for more information. Upward Bound Seeking Residence Counselors The Upward Bound and Youth Toward Excellence Programs are now hiring Residence Counselors for the Summer of 2009. Arcadia Community Center Internships The Arcadia Community Center is looking for an Intern. Of the some 1600 people residing in the neighborhoods surrounding the Community Center, the majority are internationals representing refugee and immigrant groups speaking more than 31 languages and from over 17 countries, including Kosovo, Bosnia, Cuba, Honduras, Guatemala, Iran, Iraq, Congo, Mexico, Sierra Leon, Sudan, Burundi and Togo. The majority are from Somalia--the Somali Bantu. Honors Peer Advisors Needed for Summer Orientation In order to apply you must have completed at least 30 hours and have a 3.35 or higher cumulative GPA. Applications are due by March 27, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. IMPORTANT NOTE: Both the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) and Summer Term II classes may conflict with the required work schedule for a Peer Advisor. Please take this into consideration when applying for the Peer Advisor position. Please download this application. Student Staff Applications for Honors Modes of Inquiry The Honors Program is accepting applications for student assistants to help with the fall 2009 Honors 101: Modes of Inquiry course. HON 101 is an academic orientation course that introduces freshmen to academic disciplines and campus life during the fall semester. This program is staffed by Honors students. Student assistants are selected through an application process, with applications now available in the literature rack at the front desk of the Etscorn Honors Center. During the course, student assistants are assigned to work with a specific faculty member teaching a section of HON 101. Student responsibilities may include leading and participating in class discussions, completing tasks assigned by the faculty member, or helping out with different HON 101 events. In addition, for the first time this year, HON 101 assistants will have the option of also applying to work as a CAPS Leader through the Office of First Year Initiatives. If you wish to work as both an HON 101 assistant and a CAPS Leader, your work responsibilities will extend from early July through Welcome Weekend. Both the HON 101 assistant and the CAPS Leader positions are paid. Honors is very proud to congratulate Robert Works and Jessi Eichberger for their recent awards of English Speaking Union Scholarships. Robert Works to Represent U of L as E-SU Scholar and Truman Finalist Roberts Works, a native of Independence, Kentucky and graduate of Simon Kenton High School, has received the dual distinction of receiving an English-Speaking Union Scholarship to Oxford, as well as being named as a Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Finalist. Robert is a junior and member of the University Honors Program with a double major in Political Science and Spanish. The English-Speaking Union scholarship, provided by the local Kentucky branch, will allow him to study at the University of Oxford History, Politics, and Society Summer Program, as well as providing a stay at London’s King’s College. While at Oxford, Robert will take courses in Empire and Decolonization in the Twentieth Century and The Changing Face of Britain. Jessi Eichberger to Attend Cambridge on English-Speaking Union Scholarship Jessi Eichberger, a Louisville native and graduate of Walden High School, is a junior in the University Honors Program pursuing a double major in theatrical and studio arts, with the intention of completing a MFA with an emphasis in scenic and costume design, especially concerning the adaptation of performance pieces from the ancients through the Renaissance. She will attend the University of Cambridge 2009 International Shakespeare Summer School, taking courses that focus on stagecraft. These classes will give her unique access to research the latest information about some of Shakespeare’s lesser known works, such as the Apocrypha series and The Two Gentlemen of Verona. Her scholarship includes a stay in London, residing at King’s College, and tickets to the Globe Theater. Authors Needed for Environmental E-Newsletter Former HSC president Neil Gupta is starting an Environmental E-Newsletter in Spanish, to talk about environmental issues. The purpose of this newsletter is to reach out to the Hispanic community and help students who are learning Spanish. He is looking for anyone who may want to contribute article(s) for the publication. The article(s) can be in English or Spanish but should focus on environmental topics that people think may be of interest for the community.
