Kentucky Honors Roundtable (KHR) This year's KHR conference will be held at Western Kentucky University, March 2-3. If you have a current project, work it up for an individual presentation or coordinate projects for a panel discussion. Proposals for KHR are due Jan. 26, 2007! Remember that research presentations range from data-rich projects to those reporting on Honors-related activities such as our Overseers International Seminar trips. Too often students pass by the Honors conferences because it is hard to recognize your own work as conference material. Another misconception about conferences is that the papers are heavy and the presentations large. Not so. Presentations are given in small venues with small groups of interested and friendly listeners. Check the Etscorn Honors Center literature rack for application forms and return your completed form to the Etscorn Honors Center or to Melissa. The Southern Regional Honors Council (SRHC) This year’s SRHC will be held at the Charlotte Center City Hilton hotel in Charlotte, NC, March 29-31. The theme of the Southern Regional Honors Council (SRHC) conference is “Curiosity: The Spirit of Honors Inquiry” For more information on the SRHC conference, its tentative schedule, and to retrieve an application please visit the SRHC website, Etscorn Honors Center or contact Luke Buckman. Students wishing to participate in the regional conference in SRHC are expected to participate in KHR. The application deadline for SRHC is Jan. 31 . Both conferences provide the opportunity to meet fellow honors students, directors and faculty members from across the state and the region. Students attend a variety of academic presentations during the conference, while also learning about different honors programs. The Honors Program provides travel and expenses for those attending Honors conferences. Please contact Luke as soon as possible as space is limited. The Honors Family would like to introduce you to our newest member: Cole Nicholas Hazelwood. Kira and her husband, Todd, welcomed this bouncing baby boy to the world on Dec. 26, 2006 at 11:46 p.m. He has dark hair and dark eyes, and weighed 8 pounds, 15 ounces at birth. Although he slept during the Hazelwoods' recent visit to the Etscorn Honors Center, Mom and Dad assure us that he has quite a set of lungs!
Kira and Cole take a moment to pose for a photo for us. Kira and her husband Todd have recently been by the Honors Center. Both are doing very well, despite being a bit tired as they adjust to this new person in their lives. They hope to visit us again soon! Need Spring Break Plans?? The Office of Service Learning at U of L has announced that this year’s Alternative Spring Break (ASB) will be held in Mullens, West Virginia. This ASB will take a group of U of L students to Mullens, in southern West Virginia, where we will partner with the Mullens Opportunity Center – a project of the Rural Appalachian Improvement League, Inc. (RAIL).Our main project will be home repairs that still need to be completed after a devastating flood that occurred on July 8, 2001. ASB strives to combine both service and education. As such, participants’ service in Mullens will be complemented by educational experiences geared towards gaining an understanding of cultural, social and environmental issues that impact Mullens and the larger Appalachian region. Prior to departure, attendance at preparatory workshops in February and early March is required. These workshops are an integral part of the ASB experience and assist in creating a sense of community among participants, as well as providing in-depth educational opportunities. U of L students interested in participating in ASB 2007 can pick up an application in the Office of Service Learning, SAC W310. The application deadline is Friday, January 19. Interviews will begin on Tuesday, January 23. As space is limited, participant selection is based on application and interview strength. A cost of $150 per participant helps to defray the costs of ASB; a limited number of scholarships are available. More information about the Mullens Opportunity Center and RAIL can be found respectively at www.moc.railwv.org and www.railwv.org. Calling all Honors Students! The Current is now taking art and writing submissions. Art submissions can be in any medium, but a picture will need to be taken in order to include the work in The Current. All submissions must be original and are subject to content review by the Honors staff. Share your talent, share your passion, and share your hobby! Please contact Nichole Burruss with questions and submissions.

Teach for America Maggie Lorenz, a hard-working Honors student assistant for many years, has recently been selected to participate in Teach for America. Honors Student Council News and Notes HSC regular meeting for January will be held Wednesday, Jan 24 at 12:30 p.m. in the Honors House conference room, rm. 108. Upcoming Deadlines Truman Scholarship The Goldwater for Researchers David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarship (NSEP) David L. Boren Graduate Fellowship (NSEP) The campus deadline for these scholarships is January 10. In the case of the Truman and Goldwater all students who apply on campus are not necessarily guaranteed nomination to compete at the national level. We are allowed to nominate only four Truman applicants each year, and typically do no more than two Goldwater nominations. Last year both of our Goldwater nominees won the scholarship in their sophomore year and it automatically became a two-year award. For the NSEP scholarship we encourage all interested and qualified students to seriously consider applying, as there is no limit placed on our number of candidates. Last year all three of our undergraduate candidates won the scholarship ( China, Tanzania, Turkey); as did our graduate applicant ( Korea). Dr. Condon is available to discuss study abroad programs which would be most likely to meet NSEP priorities. All scholarship materials must be submitted to Dr. Patricia Condon. If you plan to apply for any of these scholarships and have not already made an appointment with the director of the Scholarship Office, Dr. Patricia Condon, you should do so immediately. Her e-mail is patricia.condon@louisville.edu or call 852-6293. New Feature: Honors Crossword Puzzle Congratulations to Emily Robinson who was the only Honors student to successfully complete and return Honors Crossword #1, “Things about Honors that you should know.” NEW FEATURE: REMINDER Please also note that in addition to food and drink being prohibited in the Honors House computer lab, we also kindly request you refrain from eating and drinking in the Etscorn Honors Center classroom, rm. 132. Exceptions to this rule will be made for meetings, study sessions and other events, but only as approved by Dr. Richardson.
