HONORS STUDENT COUNCIL (HSC)

HSC is proud to sponsor the following regular monthly events: the outing, movie night and the dining club night. Please see below for details, and check The Current regularly for updates on activities, as well as the Facebook group Honors Program Announcements at
http://louisville.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2204853946

Save the date. Thursday is HSC night!
Most HSC activities will be taking place on Thursday evenings, so that those who travel out of town on weekends can still participate. Hopefully not many of you have early Friday morning classes. You can plan for Thursdays to be a time to hang out with Honors people and relax. That’s the logic; we hope you’ll come! It’s going to be great!

August events theme is the Kentucky State Fair.
For this reason, our outings are on Saturdays because of the Fair’s calendar of events.

Saturday, Aug. 26, Group Trip to the Kentucky State Fair
Admission is 7 bucks and parking is 5 bucks per vehicle. Gates open at 9 a.m.; Honors students interested in going will carpool. Let’s meet in front of the Etscorn Center at 10 a.m. (not too early on a Saturday morning!). Please RSVP to Paul Mick if you think you want to go (paul.mick@louisville.edu, or Facebook).

If there are corrections or omissions, e-mail honors@louisville.edu to update information.

PICNICKING WITH HONORS!

Welcome Back Honors Picnic

Honors Student Council would like you to join us for a celebratory picnic in honor of our terrific University Honors Program and the wonderful new freshman class joining us. We won't be hard to find -- check in the grass near the Honors House Monday, Aug. 28 between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Honors students tend to be hungry, and they do come early. If you want to eat heartily, arrive before noon. We'll be inside if the weather is wet.

Attention Pre-Med Students
Especially Freshmen

Dean David Wiegman, Associate Vice-President of Health Affairs, visits the Honors Program Monday, Sept. 25 for a pre-med discussion. The program is in Threlkeld room 132 at 5:30 p.m. Freshmen can especially benefit from this visit, but sophomores may also find it helpful. Anyone interested in pre-med is welcome.

MCAT MEOW

In August, the computerized MCAT will be administered through Prometric's full network of domestic testing sites and an expanded offering of international sites. The examination content of the paper-based and computerized MCAT will be identical and all MCAT scores will be released at the same time, in approximately 60 days following the administration. The test day for these examinees will be as much as 2.5 hours shorter due to reduced administrative overhead, flexible-length breaks and self pacing within the time allocations. Please register early as space is limited. Read the following word doc for more information.

Should you experience any problems, please contact Will Armstrong in the Honors House so he can address any issues. Paper is available at the Overseers Honors House reception desk on the first floor for $.25/25 sheets.

Senior Thesis

Thursday, Sept. 7, at 4 p.m. is the date for the Senior Honors Thesis information meeting held in Ekstrom Library, room 254. There is a form you will need to fill out to ensure that you are given the graduation distinction: University Honors Scholar.

HONORS CONFERENCES
REMINDER

COOL Justice

The Southern Region of the nationally known organization COOL (Campus Outreach Opportunity League) will be hosted by U of L this year. This conference is an attempt to bring together students from the South to educate them on matters of social justice on a local and global scale. U of L's chapter of COOL meets every Friday from 12 noon to 1 p.m. in the Service Learning Office in the SAC. For more information contact Jennifer Wallin at jlwall06@.louisville.edu.

Honors Web Pages

Longtime Honors students will notice some changes in our Honors website. The design has changed to help visually impaired students use automated readers. In addition, we now comply with the new U of L website look. With a few new and some old elements, we hope to serve you better; and yet maintain the Honors website you already know well. One new feature is the Academic Opportunities menu item offering you information about the Honors Scholars Program and the Senior Thesis. We usually update the whole website -- more than 50 pages -- twice a year, once in late summer and again between semesters. If you wonder about the timeliness of the information, check below the footer for this information: Last content review: 21-Aug-2006. This gives you the most recent revision date. If you have questions about the deadlines published on some pages -- scholarships come to mind -- remember that deadlines are announced by different organizations at different times of year. We try to keep up with everything, but perfection is not possible. It is usually safe to remember that deadlines are about the same each year. But it is even safer to track down the date yourself.
