Honors Online
Newsletter roadmap

Notice of our bi-weekly newsletter, complete with a link to our website, should come to your e-mail twice a month, eight issues a semester. In the left-hand column, look for the calendar and the Honors Volunteer Program. In the center, you'll usually find the core Honors stories -- Honors events, conference announcements, registration news, special seminars -- the sort of news and activities you don't want to miss. In the right-hand column we feature news about people, Honors student research and Honors faculty as well as scholarship and fellowship news. If money interests you, keep an eye on the right column.

Pictures

Pictures of Honors-related activities for our web pages and bulletin boards are welcome. I am currently looking for photos of Honors Students who have donated their hair, in 2007, to Locks of Love or some other charity. If you have something you would like to share, bring in an extra copy or a copy we can color scan. If you take digital pictures, send a URL site location (preferred) or a digital copy to Nichole Burruss at nichole.burruss@louisville.edu .

FACE TIME

(Facilitating the growth of a cohesive Honors community.)

Getting to know you,
Getting to know all about you.

Sara Gleason is a rising sophomore majoring in Biochemistry and minoring in Music History. A Louisville native and graduate from North Bullitt High School, Sara is actively committed to making the most of her college experience. She might already look familiar to you because this summer she served as student orientation staff and during the academic year she serves as a Honors Shadow host. Sara belongs to the Society of Undergraduate Chemistry Students and Baptist Campus Ministries. In her free time she enjoys playing the piano, singing, acting, reading, playing volleyball and tennis and participating in church activities. After medical school Sara’s goal is, “to become a doctor that treats patients, not diseases and to find a cure for multiple sclerosis,” a debilitating disease that her mother and thousands of people suffer from every day. Some interesting things about Sara that people may not know are that she speaks some Swahili and plays the harp. Sara says that her contribution to making the world a better place will be to care about the people that others forget about. She also offers this wonderful advice to you her peers, “Get to know your professors even if you don’t need help in that class and never be afraid to ask questions. Should you see Sara around campus be sure to ask her about smarties or just enjoy her bubbly personality, but be sure to spend some face time with her.

** If you would like to nominate yourself or someone you know to be featured in the next Current please complete this form and return it to the Etscorn Honors Center or e-mail the form to Nichole.Burruss@louisville.edu.

Computer TECHniques

Just a reminder: both Etscorn and the Honors House now serve those with wireless laptops. Please note that the Honors lab computers are primarily to be used for homework and research and NOT for games. Students should not drink or eat around the PCs. Should you experience any problems, please contact Will Armstrong in the Honors House so he can address any issues. Paper is available at the Overseers Honors House reception desk on the first floor for $.25/25 sheets.

Honors Web Pages

We usually update the whole website -- more than 50 pages -- twice a year, once in late summer and again between semesters. If you wonder about the timeliness of the information, check below the footer for this information: Last content review: 21-Aug-2007 . This gives you the most recent revision date. If you have questions about the deadlines published on some pages -- scholarships come to mind -- remember that deadlines are announced by different organizations at different times of year. We try to keep up with everything, but perfection is not possible. It is usually safe to remember that deadlines are about the same each year. But it is even safer to track down the date yourself.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Admissions Office

The Office of Admissions is looking for shadow students to host prospective shadow students on campus for a day. We match potential students and their U of L hosts by academic discipline. Take the student to one or two classes and then to lunch, paid for by the Admissions Office. This is a great opportunity for service hours and to spread your enthusiasm for U of L to possible incoming students! Shadow Host interest meeting and training is Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 5:00 p.m. in the Belknap Research Building. Dinner will be served. Applications are available in the Etscorn Honors Center. For more information contact: Megan Adams, 852-7540 or megan.adams@louisville.edu.
