FLOW: For the Love of Water

Join G.R.A.S.S. and Special Guest Speaker
Gill Holland on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 for a screening of the first film in a documentary series sponsored by G.R.A.S.S. This documentary focuses on the world water crisis, and the co-producer, Gill Holland, will be holding a question and answer session before the film begins.  Parking will be available beginning at 7 p.m. in the blue lot off of 3rd & Brandeis.  Before the film begins, booths will be set up with information from local companies on sustainability issues.  The screening starts at 7:30 p.m. and admission will be free!

Service Learning Expo

The Office of Civic Engagement, Leadership and Service in partnership with the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences is looking for
students to participate in our first annual Service-Learning EXPO: Connections to the Community on Tuesday, April 7th from 12-3 pm in the Lutz Atrium.
This expo will be an opportunity for students to showcase their collaborative work with non-profit organizations.These efforts may have been conducted through course work, internships, or recognized

HVP -- Honors Volunteer Program

HVP is an organization that seeks to give Honors Program students opportunities to volunteer for university-sponsored activities, and in the greater Louisville community. HVP hosts a monthly lunch meeting in Etscorn Honors Center to distribute information about each month’s activities. The next HVP meeting will be held in the Etscorn Honors Center Classroom, April. 2, 2009 from 12:20- 12:50 p.m.

All HVP meetings will be held the first Thursday of each month at the same time and place. Those who wish to be notified about HVP events by listserv, please send your name and e-mail address to krtrim01@louisville.edu.

Before every event, you will receive e-mail with the exact time, locations, car pool instructions and directions. Please also check out the Facebook group Honors Volunteer Program.

Americorps Bonner Leader Program

The AmeriCorps Bonner Leader Program is a service-learning leadership program supported by the Bonner Foundation and funded through AmeriCorps. Students who are interested in making a commitment to: engage in weekly community service-learning,
explore social justice issues, connect to the larger Louisville landscape and non-profit organizations,
apply academic learning in our community, and
build/ leadership skills with a team of committed UofL students, and earn an educational award for tuition or student loans are invited to apply!

The Anne and William Axton Reading Series, Spring 2009

Mark your calendar!

Lydia Davis is the author of four collections of short fiction, including Varieties of Disturbance, a finalist for the 2007 National Book Award; and a novel, The End of the Story. Her work has been anthologized in The Best American Short Stories and The Best American Poetry, and has been published in numerous journals ranging from The New Yorker to McSweeny’s. Davis is also the translator of avant-garde French novels, memoirs, and volumes of literary criticism, most recently, Swann's Way by Marcel Proust, which received the French-American Foundation Annual Translation Prize. Davis was named a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government for her fiction and translation, and in 2003 received a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship.

Etscorn Scholarship Applications Available

Applications for several academic scholarships from Honors in the value of $5000 for the 2009-2010 academic year are now available. Out-of-state students are encouraged to apply. Online applications may be found on the Local Scholarships page under Honors Program Academic Scholarships, with paper applications located in the information rack in the reception area of the Etscorn Honors Center. The Etscorn family supports these scholarships through a generous donation. Applications are due in the Etscorn Honors Center Monday, April 20 and should be returned to the attention of Dr. John Richardson.

Undergraduate Research Symposium

The Undergraduate Research Symposium is April 14 from 12:30 p.m. through 4 p.m. in the Belknap research building first floor seminar room. Abstracts are due April 6. The Undergraduate Research Symposium is a chance for undergraduates to share what they have learned through their research experiences with a larger audience. It provides a forum where students can showcase research projects that build on and enrich faculty work across the disciplines. Symposium participants gain valuable experience in oral and graphic presentation, and can include their presentations on résumés and graduate school applications. The symposium includes projects from all disciplines, allowing students to learn from each other about a broad range of exciting research topics.

Walk-in Advising Begins March 30. New Applicants April 8.

Students who missed an opportunity to meet with Dr. Richardson, Melissa, Luke or Tony, can do so on or after March 30, 2009, when Honors Walk-in advising commences at the Etscorn Honors Center. New applicants to the Honors Program can come in to see an Honors advisor starting April 8. Walk-in advising will end on April 10.


REMINDER
Senior Honors Project Deadline

For students who are submitting a thesis for graduation this spring, please note that your oral examination must be completed and thesis approval form must be returned to the Etscorn Honors Center by March 30, 2009. Students graduating in August or later please see the honors website for more information.

SCA Internships
The Student Conservation Assocation is looking to select college students to work on Conservation Internships http://www.thesca.org/more-environmental-conservation-internships/

There are internships in over 50 environmental disciplines in natural areas across the United States including Alaska and Hawaii.They work on building trails, conservation projects and ecological research initiatives. Upward Bound Seeking Residence Counselors

The Upward Bound and Youth Toward Excellence Programs are now hiring Residence Counselors for the Summer of 2009. The summer program operating dates are May 25, 2009 through July 18, 2009. Arcadia Community Center Internships

The Arcadia Community Center is looking for an Intern. Of the some 1600 people residing in the neighborhoods surrounding the Community Center, the majority are internationals representing refugee and immigrant groups speaking more than 31 languages and from over 17 countries, including Kosovo, Bosnia, Cuba, Honduras, Guatemala, Iran, Iraq, Congo, Mexico, Sierra Leon, Sudan, Burundi and Togo. The majority are from Somalia--the Somali Bantu.
Four summer associates will work in partnership with our current project as relates to our goal: assisting with the difficult process of acculturation many of our residents face by increasing our center’s capacity to provide safe, educational, and interactive programming for the youth of the Arcadia neighborhood through a holistic approach that involves partnership and familiarity with the youths’ network of support such as family, neighborhood, ethnic community, school, and community center staff and volunteers. This is an unpaid internship that will start on June 1, 2009 and end on July 31, 2009. The last day to apply is May 20, 2009. Honors Peer Advisors Needed for Summer Orientation

Peer Advisors are needed for the 2009 summer orientation session. The University Honors Program will be hiring Peer Advisors to help incoming freshmen plan and schedule their courses during the 2009 Freshman Orientation Program. This is an outstanding opportunity for Honors students to learn more about the university, discuss their experiences in the University Honors Program with interested new students and parents, and earn some money along the way. Students will be expected to work approximately 20 hours each week from mid-May to July 2, 2008.

In order to apply you must have completed at least 30 hours and have a 3.35 or higher cumulative GPA. Applications are due by March 27, 2009 at 4:00 p.m.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Both the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) and Summer Term II classes may conflict with the required work schedule for a Peer Advisor. Please take this into consideration when applying for the Peer Advisor position.

Please note that in addition to food and drink being prohibited in the Honors House computer lab, we also kindly request you refrain from eating and drinking in the Etscorn Honors Center classroom, rm. 132. Exceptions to this rule will be made for meetings, study sessions and other events, but only as approved by Dr. Richardson.

Notice of our bi-weekly newsletter, complete with a link to our website, should come to your e-mail twice a month, eight issues a semester. In the left-hand column, look for the calendar and the Honors Volunteer Program. In the center, you'll usually find the core Honors stories -- Honors events, conference announcements, registration news, special seminars -- the sort of news and activities you don't want to miss. In the right-hand column we feature news about people, Honors student research and Honors faculty as well as scholarship and fellowship news, jobs and internships.

 

 

 

 

Congrats to our Award-winning Students!
Three Students Win Critical Language Scholarships
Three U of L students, Joseph Lee Young (Current Honors Student), Jeffrey Benedict, and Christopher Cunningham (Former Honors Student), have received Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes for 2009. Sponsored by the United States Department of State, the CLS program offers overseas study in critical need foreign languages. 
   

Honors Student Lee YoungJ. Lee Young, is a senior at U of L, majoring in Anthropology with a minor in Russian Studies.  Young has the distinction of winning a second CLS award to study advanced Russian, after winning a CLS for intermediate Russian in 2008.  His future plans include applying for a Fulbright grant and pursuing a career in public health and medical anthropology.   


J. BenedictJeffrey Benedict, a first year student at U of L’s Brandeis Law School, will use his CLS to study Turkish.  As a former Mitchell scholar, Benedict earned an M.A. from the National University of Ireland in Musicology.  Benedict graduated summa cum laude from Vanderbilt University in 2007 and is an ROTC 2nd Lieutenant.  


Former Honors studnet Christopher CunninghamChristopher Cunningham, a 2005 graduate of the University of Louisville, will study Punjabi in India. In 2006-2007, he studied in Northern Ireland as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, earning an M.A. at Queen’s University Belfast.  Cunningham is currently a graduate student in Political Science at Northeastern University.  Cunningham was a recipient of the Etscorn Honors Scholarship from 2002-2004.

ANNOUNCING THE SPRING 2009 COMPETITION FOR WORLD SCHOLARS FUNDING FOR TRAVEL IN 2009-2010!
 
The WORLD SCHOLARS PROGRAM provides select undergraduate students with up to $5000 of funding to support a semester or year of study in a country or region of the world whose principal language is not English. World Scholars use their foreign-language skills to engage in some form of full-immersion experience (whether coursework with the local student population, internship or volunteer work, or directed study). Upon their return, World Scholars work with a faculty advisor on a final project (such as an honors thesis, a community service project, or an application for a major national fellowship) that integrates their international experience with their undergraduate studies at U of L.
 
Minimum eligibility requirements:
* full-time undergraduate student with at least sophomore standing at the time of application.
* active commitment to achieving fluency in the language of the host country or region. (Preference will be given to applicants who already demonstrate at least intermediate-level proficiency.)
* declared major or minor in any of the non-language disciplines offered at the University of Louisville.
* minimum GPA of 3.0 overall and good academic standing.
 
You are not eligible if you:
* cannot commit to a full semester or year of study abroad in 2009-2010.
* intend to travel in your final semester of undergraduate study.
 NOTE: preference will be given to applicants who are not native speakers of the country to which they intend to travel.

The fridge and pantry in the Honors House has been restocked and is better than ever! Honors Student Council would like to thank everyone for their support. We hope you all enjoy the items for sale in the house. If you have any suggestions for items to purchase, please contact David Song (ddsong01@louisville.edu), the Honors Student Council Vice President. Please remember to pay for any purchases you make. This helps to ensure that the fridge and pantry remain stocked throughout the year. Thank you once again for your support.

Got Honors?

There are many wonderful ways that you can participate in the honors program beyond taking an honors class. If you enjoy giving back to your community then HVP is for you. If you want to be a part of the changes in honors then HSC is for you. The Honors program also offers student worker positions during the academic year and summer. Would you like to expand your scholastic horizons with research? If so Honors offers four wonderful opportunities a year to travel, meet other students, and earn valuable experience presenting research to your peers. If you would like more information on any of these opportunities contact an honors advisor, staff member, or read The Current.


     

THE CURRENT, the University Honors Program online newsletter published every two weeks during the fall and spring terms, welcomes submissions.
