Honors Advising and Course Listing

It's that time of year again! Sign-up sheets for advising appointments are in the Etscorn Honors Center. The appointments, which are setup for 30 minutes, are filling fast! If you haven't signed up for your appointment with Melissa, Tony Luke or Dr. Richardson, be sure you come by the Honors Center today! Priority registration begins April 10, 2008.

Registration in each Honors course requires prior approval from the Honors director or an Honors academic counselor. If you are an Honors student who is enrolled in a college other than Arts & Sciences (Business, Music, Speed, Education, Nursing), you will need to see your advisor in that college as well.

What do you need for your advising appointment? Be sure to bring with you a tentative schedule. Although the fall 2008 course schedule won't be online until sometime in mid-March, you can get a good idea of the types of courses that will be offered by perusing the fall 2007 online course schedule. A comprehensive list of Honors course offerings is available online and will be updated with descriptions, times, professor names and course numbers as soon as that information is made available to us.

The fall 2008 Honors course listing featuring Honors seminars and general education are online. The listing with the other U of L course offerings will follow in early to mid-March. Before that time, consult the fall 2007 schedule as a reference since the schedule does not change radically from year to year.

**Remember it is important to come in early because classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Make the most of your time with your advisor -- read through the course listing and arrive with a tentative schedule.**

Undergraduate Research Symposium

The Undergraduate Research Symposium is April 15 from 12:30 p.m. through 4 p.m. in the Belknap research building first floor seminar room. Abstracts are due April 7. The Undergraduate Research Symposium is a chance for undergraduates to share what they have learned through their research experiences with a larger audience. It provides a forum where students can showcase research projects that build on and enrich faculty work across the disciplines. Symposium participants gain valuable experience in oral and graphic presentation, and can include their presentations on résumés and graduate school applications. The symposium includes projects from all disciplines, allowing students to learn from each other about a broad range of exciting research topics. Abstract instructions are available online.

10 for $10,000

On Mar. 27, 2008, the Honors Student Council is planning to have a large book sale, open to the general public, with all proceeds going to the Kosair Children's Hospital.

Although we are calling it a book sale, donations are not limited to books. We are also collecting CDs, DVDs, LPs, and other forms of media. At this point, the council members have collected a few thousand books and CDs, but we obviously need many more to meet our goal. We would be incredibly grateful if you took the time to look through your books, music, and movies in your room and home to select a few items to donate to this sale. Any amount of donations will be accepted, but the only items we are unable to accept are older textbooks. Books, or other items, can be dropped off Luke’s office at the Etscorn Honors Center with your name and e-mail address. Please also contact Luke if you are interested in volunteering to help with the sale or sale preparations.

Show another geek your appreciation and give the gift of a Go Geek T-shirt!

HSC T-Shirts have arrived! These incredibly stylish T's are on sale in the Honors Center for $10. The front image printed on the black shirt is of the infamous white squirrel. The back of the shirt displays the following text, “Go Geek! ΗΕ Γ Honors Student Council Honors Program University of Louisville.”

Give us your Tacos, Au Gratin Potatoes and Cheerios! Honors Student Council is collecting Box Tops for Education. The collection box in located in the Overseers Honors House on the window sill of the lounge area (Behind the table where snacks are kept.) HSC will be donating the collected box tops to a local school. Please visit their website for participating products and contact Sarah Jane Bodell at with any questions.

Summer Employment Opportunities

Honors Peer Advisors Needed for Summer Orientation

Peer Advisors are needed for the 2008 summer orientation session. The University Honors Program will be hiring Peer Advisors to help incoming freshmen plan and schedule their courses during the 2008 Freshman Orientation Program. This is an outstanding opportunity for Honors students to learn more about the university, discuss their experiences in the University Honors Program with interested new students and parents, and earn some money along the way. Students will be expected to work approximately 20-25 hours each week from mid-May to July 2, 2008.

In order to apply you must have completed at least 30 hours and have a 3.35 or higher cumulative GPA. Applications are due March 30 by 4:00 p.m.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Both the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) and Summer Term II classes will conflict with the required work schedule for a Peer Advisor. Please take this into consideration when applying for the Peer Advisor position.

Please download this application. Once you have completed it, please return it to the front desk at Etscorn Honors Center.

THE CURRENT, the University Honors Program online newsletter published every two weeks during the fall and spring terms, welcomes submissions.
