Summer Research Opportunities at the University of Louisville The Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) provides U of L undergraduate students with a ten-week, research-intensive, one-on-one mentored research experience in a department that offers graduate degrees. The program begins the Tuesday after Memorial Day. It includes a student stipend as well as some funding for research supplies with participants expected to attend weekly group seminars on topics related to research, ethics and graduate education. Preferrably, students should be in their sophomore or junior year of study. For more information, read more about the program and the application for Summer 2006.
Other summer undergraduate research programs available on campus include the National Institutes of Health KBRIN Program, the Neurosciences Program, the Minority Undergraduate Summer Program in Cardiovascular Research, the Cancer Education Program at UofL and the Sociology Research Experience. Summary information and links to web sites where applications forms can be found is online. In addition, there is always the possibility of an undergraduate research opportunity supported by an individual faculty member's grant for a summer research project.

Alternative Spring Break Alternative Spring Break (ASB) will perform service as well as study the history and effects of slavery in Charleston, South Carolina, Saturday March 11 to Saturday March 18. Students who are enrolled in "Reparations" (PHIL 305, COM 301, PAS 300, SCHG 300) are given priority to participate in ASB, since Prof. Ede Warner and Prof. David Owen will be connecting the course with the trip. A few U of L students who are not enrolled in the class may apply for the trip or add the class. We are seeking "new" participants this year. If you have previously participated in ASB, you may not apply this year. Please call or e-mail Kim Shaver, Service Learning coordinator, 852-3436, if you have questions. Travel, lodging and some meals will be provided for all participants. Each participant is required to contribute $150 to the cost of the trip, and to attend approximately six mandatory orientation meetings. You bring your own spending money and money for meals not covered. Financial assistance is available. Fill out the attached trip application (this does not enroll you in the class, which must be done through normal normal channels). Return applications by Friday, Jan. 20. The trip is sponsored by Campus Life, the Honors Program and the Women’s’ Center.
HONORS CONFERENCES Kentucky Honors Roundtable at UK SRHC in Orlando The Honors Program is calling for papers and presentations for two spring conferences.
The Kentucky Honors Roundtable (KHR) will be held at the University of Kentucky, Feb. 24-25. If you have a current undertaking, work it up for an individual presentation or coordinate projects for a panel discussion. Proposals for KHR must be in the Honors House by Jan. 11. Remember that research presentations range from data-rich projects to those reporting on Honors-related activities such as our Overseers International Seminar trips. Too often students pass by the Honors conferences because it is hard to recognize your own work as conference material. Another misconception about conferences is that the papers are heavy and the presentations large. Not so. Presentations are given in small venues with small groups of interested and friendly listeners. Check the Etscorn Honors Center literature rack for application forms or download the KHR application form and return to the Etscorn Center or Luke.
The Southern Regional Honors Council (SRHC) will be held at the Walt Disney World Coronado Spring Resort in Orlando, April 6-8. The theme of the Southern Regional Honors Council (SRHC) conference is “Honors, the Natural and the Man-Made: Conflict or Accord?” For more information on the SRHC conference and its tentative schedule, please download the attached information. Students wishing to participate in the regional conference in Orlando are expected to participate in KHR. The application deadline for SRHC is Jan. 20.
If you are interested in attending this conference, please download and complete the SRHC application form. To apply, you may send the form as an attachment to honors@louisville.edu or fax it to (502) 852-3919 or mail it to the University Honors Program, University of Louisville, Louisville, Ky, 40292. If you have questions, contact Luke Buckman at luke.buckman@louisville.edu or call 502.852.6293. For information, download and read information about the SRHC conference.
Both conferences provide the opportunity to meet fellow honors students, directors and faculty members from across the state and the region. Students attend a variety of academic presentations during the conference, while also learning about different honors programs. The Honors Program provides travel and expenses for those attending Honors conferences. Because SRHC is in Orlando in the spring, we anticipate an increased application pool to that conference. Please contact Luke as soon as possible as space is limited. |

National Scholarship Office News We are very proud of our National Scholarship Office headed up by Dr. Patricia Condon. During the last three academic years in which the office has been active, U of L students applying for national and international scholarship and fellowship opportunities have had extraordinary success. Of the applicants applying for Fulbright Fellowships each year, between 30 and 40 percent of U of L applicants have received awards.
“The Top Producers of Fulbright Awards for American Students by Type of Institution,” an article in the Nov. 4, 2005, issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education, named the top 28 research institutions with student Fulbrights for 2005-2006. Among these universities, only ten had an award percentage rate of 30 percent or higher.
Another U of L Scholarship Office point of pride this year is the National Security Education Program (NSEP)/David L. Boren Scholarship news. The National Security Education Program announced that of the 730 applicants for Boren Scholarships, 47 were awarded. Of the four Boren applicants from U of L, two were awarded scholarships and one was named an alternate.

Minority Scholarship Fund The ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund is for those attending an ABA-accredited law school in 2006-2007 and is "intended to encourage racial and ethnic minority students to apply to law school and to provide financial assistance to the scholarship recipients." To learn more, please go to http://www.abanet.org/op/legal.html. The deadline is March 1, but if you are interested you should look at the application soon because it's over ten pages long and requires a lot of details and documentation about your financial circumstances.
