The College of Business is offering a six-hour summer course entitled "Simply Business" for non-business students this summer. Rising seniors may find this course especially interesting. "Simply Business" (Mgmt 415) is a six credit hour summer management program that introduces you to business by showing the inner workings of a local company (Texas Roadhouse). You explore the risks and rewards of business and discover what managers have to wrestle with daily to be successful. Are You Information Literate?

Do You Rely on Google?

"Information literacy (IL) is the ability to know when information is needed, and find, evaluate and use the appropriate information." We take our definition from the American Library Association's Presidential Report. If you do web-based research, check out Ekstrom Library's Information Literacy resources and also learn to use U of L's online journal resources. Don't find yourself now, or in your future life, in the position of the manufacturing company that spent $500,000 on a project only to find when journal literature was reviewed as the project neared completion, that they had reinvented a product.

THE CURRENT, the University Honors Program online newsletter published every two weeks during the fall and spring terms, welcomes submissions. Material should be submitted by the Wednesday preceding the next Monday publication date. Electronic submissions are preferable. Please send to Ruth Spangler by e-mail at rlspan02@louisville.edu. Hard copy may be sent to the Honors House c/o THE CURRENT. The next issue of THE CURRENT appears February 6, 2006.

Criminal Justice Seminar

Experiences Cultural Revelation

By MariaTeresa de la Cruz

Political science, justice administration

Cobblestone streets, exposed plazas, ornate and opulent chapels and a slow-delicate pace would describe the city of Morelia in the state of Michoacán, Mexico. Following the Honors Overseers International Seminar titled "Comparative Criminal Justice Systems" taught by Professor Deborah Wilson, sixteen students spent ten days in Mexico studying its criminal justice system. The system is surprisingly responsive and treatment-oriented, but more unexpectedly, the students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in an unusual aesthetic experience. (continued)

Migration Links Morelia and Kentucky

By Alexander Bajorek

Biology, Spanish minor

Gathered around the conference room tables, staring at the projected screen with my classmates and professor, I couldn’t help thinking that we hadn’t strayed too far from home. The presenter, Carlos Vega of the Michoacán Police Department, could probably have used lessons in PowerPoint presentations himself. But our class was comparative criminal justice systems, and we weren’t there to bicker about slide structure. (continued)
