SUMMER work/study U of L Summer Portuguese Studies Program This summer the Portuguese Studies Program offers study in Portugal for U of L students, taking them to the north of the country (and briefly into Spain) for a course on cultural identity, space and place. The course, Anthropology 339, is taught in English by faculty from U of L, with participation by faculty and students from the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) in the cities of Vila Real and Miranda do Douro. Students are expected to study intensive Portuguese in conjunction with the anthropology course. For more information visit http://www.louisville.edu/a-s/anthro/PiP.htm. Internships for Careers in International Development The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has a limited number of summer 2006 internships available in a few of their overseas missions in sub-Saharan Africa as well as in Washington, D.C. This is an excellent opportunity for outstanding students interested in pursuing careers in international development. For more information visit the USAID internship page. Lunch with the Rotary Scholars (Yes, if you sign up there is a FREE LUNCH.) Reserve a box lunch to hear Rotaract invited speaker Daniel Sturgeon, who is currently studying in Japan as a Rotary World Peace Fellow. Daniel Sturgeon has both bachelor's and master's degrees in political science from the University of Louisville (2000 and 2004), and is now a second year graduate student at International Christian University (ICU) in Tokyo. Daniel lived and worked in Germany and Japan prior to studying at ICU. His research interests include public diplomacy, international relations, U.S. foreign policy and East Asian relations. The lunch meeting is Wednesday, Feb. 15 at noon in Floyd Theater in the SAC. In addition, U of L's Medina Del Castillo, current president of Rotaract, and Chris Cunningham will talk about their forthcoming Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships to Mexico and Ireland and the Belize Rotary sponsored spring break international service learning trip. FIRST CALL National Conference, Fall 2006 National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) Fall 2006 conference proposal deadline is March 20, 2006. Interested Honors faculty, students and staff are urged to apply. Students should contact Luke Buckman at luke.buckman@louisville.edu or 852-4666. The conference proposal forms are up on the NCHC web site. The theme of the 2006 NCHC conference in Philadelphia Nov. 15 through 19, 2006, is “Liberty: Foundation for Inquiry, Innovation and Invention."
Spring Advising FYI Sign-up sheets for advising will be out on the Etscorn Honors Center counter on Feb. 24 at 8 a.m. The schedule for Honors courses is under construction and is online now; it is also available under course listings in the above menu. The U of L fall 2006 schedule of classes may not be online before advising begins, but the schedule for fall 2005 can be used as a reference since the schedule does not change radically from year to year. Be sure to do some schedule pre-planning before an advising appointment.
Honors Scholars Banquet, Last Call for RSVP If you are an Honors Scholar (you have formally signed up, plan to graduate with 24 hours of Honors coursework and have an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher) and have not yet sent in your RSVP for the Feb. 20 banquet, do so by Feb. 13 so that you may be included. The Honors Scholars banquet features the fall 2006 Honors seminar preview. You may RSVP by sending e-mail to honors@louisville.edu with "Honors Scholars banquet" in the subject line.
U of L Dance Marathon Dance marathon interest sessions will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the Floyd Theater, Wednesday, Feb. 8 at noon in SAC 314 and Thursday, Feb. 9 at 12:15 p.m. in SAC 303A. The U of L dance marathon will take place on March 25-26. It is a 24 hour dance-a-thon to raise money for Kosair Children's Hospital.
Teach For America Teach for America is the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates of all backgrounds and academic majors who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools and who become lifelong leaders in the effort to expand opportunities for children. In particular, we recommend that students interested in Teach For America watch this 12-minute video online at http://www.teachforamerica.org/meet_online.html. You can also sign up for a Teach For America info-session via conference call on that same page. Final application deadline is Friday, Feb. 17.

FYI Arizona Grand Canyon Semester This coming fall the Grand Canyon Semester offers the unique opportunity to experience learning that is interdisciplinary, experiential, theoretical, practical and usually life-changing. The semester is jointly sponsored by Northern Arizona University and the National Park Service. More information and application forms are available at http://www.grandcanyonsemester.nau.edu. Course credits (15 to 18) are designed to transfer back to the home university.

Continuing Student Scholarship Continuing students who do not have a full tuition scholarship may apply for a limited number of academic scholarships available to undergraduate students seeking their first bachelor's degree, who have (by the end of the current spring term) earned at least 24, but not more than 144 cumulative credit hours and compiled a 3.0 cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) or better at the University of Louisville. The priority deadline to apply is March 15. More information is available at the Student Financial Aid Office. Applications are available online at ULink.
Lilialyce Akers Travel Awards for the Study of Women and Global Issues Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply for awards up to $500 to facilitate the study of issues affecting women in the global south or newly democratizing nations (e.g., Eastern Europe, the Commonwealth of States). The awards are to be used to subsidize travel or expenses related to on-site research outside the United States in 2006. Research conducted in conjunction with U of L's Alternative Spring Break program is eligible for funding under this program.
