Medina del Castillo has been named a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar. She and Chris Cunningham received news of pending scholarships during the summer; the scholarships have now been confirmed and officially announced.
Rotary Roundup, Two Scholars Confirmed Medina del Castillo Spring 2005 graduate It was 8 a.m. when I received the call: “Medina, you got it!” I had just received a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship, a scholarship that would take me to Colima, Mexico, for an academic year. It was only six months earlier that I had heard about this prestigious scholarship. Never did I imagine that countless visits to Dr. Condon's office and continual drafts of application essays would lead me to that call.
As a graduate student studying political science and Latin American Studies, I will continue this type of coursework at the Universidad de Colima. There, taking classes in their political science and public administration department will not only enhance my Spanish skills, but allow me to gain firsthand international experience in a true Latin American setting. Because I am interested in directing an international non-profit or non-government organization one day, I hope to take from this experience a true understanding of how our world works from an international perspective. The Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship offers me the chance to serve as an ambassador of goodwill, and to continue the Rotary objective of practicing goodwill to others and enhancing cultural communications in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I know it will truly open my eyes and allow me to continue my own search for cultural understanding.

HONORS CONFERENCES Kentucky Honors Roundtable at UK SRHC in Orlando The Honors Program is calling for papers and presentations for two spring conferences.
The Kentucky Honors Roundtable (KHR) will be held at the University of Kentucky, Feb. 27-28. If you have a current undertaking, work it up for an individual presentation or coordinate projects for a panel discussion. Proposals for KHR must be in the Honors House by Jan. 11. Remember that research presentations range from data-rich projects to those reporting on Honors-related activities such as our Overseers International Seminar trips. Too often students pass by the Honors conferences because it is hard to recognize your own work as conference material. Another misconception about conferences is that the papers are heavy and the presentations large. Not so. Presentations are given in small venues with small groups of interested and friendly listeners. Check the Etscorn Honors Center literature rack for application forms or download the KHR application form and return to the Etscorn Center or Luke.
The Southern Regional Honors Council (SRHC) will be held at the Walt Disney World Coronado Spring Resort in Orlando, April 6-8. The theme of the Southern Regional Honors Council (SRHC) conference is “Honors, the Natural and the Man-Made: Conflict or Accord?” For more information on the SRHC conference and its tentative schedule, please download the attached information. Students wishing to participate in the regional conference in Orlando are expected to participate in KHR. The application deadline for SRHC is Jan. 20. If you are interested in attending this conference, please download and complete the SRHC application form. To apply, you may send the form as an attachment to honors@louisville.edu or fax it to (502) 852-3919 or mail it to the University Honors Program, University of Louisville, Louisville, Ky, 40292. If you have questions, contact Luke Buckman at luke.buckman@louisville.edu or call 502.852.6293. For information, download and read information about the SRHC conference.
Both conferences provide the opportunity to meet fellow honors students, directors and faculty members from across the state and the region. Students attend a variety of academic presentations during the conference, while also learning about different honors programs. The Honors Program provides travel and expenses for those attending Honors conferences. Because SRHC is in Orlando in the spring, we anticipate an increased application pool to that conference. Please contact Luke as soon as possible as space is limited.
Medical Student Mentors for Pre-Meds A new program provides the opportunity for sophomore, junior and senior pre-med undergraduates to be mentored by first- and second-year medical students at the University of Louisville. If you are a pre-med undergraduate (sophomore or above) and are interested in being paired with a medical student, or you are interested in obtaining more information about how this mentoring opportunity works, please contact Mark Fairweather at mark.fairweather@louisville.edu.

Chris Cunningham, U of L Honors student named a Rotary Scholar, studied in Ireland during the summer.
U of L Rotary Scholars Now Official! Chris Patrick Cunningham Political science, sociology Only a year ago, Northern Ireland was very far from Louisville. Filling out applications from the warm confines of Dr. Condon's office in the Honors House, I could only comprehend “the six counties” through myths and a history lesson. I was quite limited in my perspective. The images and characters that personify the land -- the farms, the shorelines, the rain, the Troubles, British paratroopers, the I.R.A., the neighborhood pubs, the rolling green hills of the countryside, the colorful urban corridors of Belfast -- were an ocean away.
Now, having been awarded the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship, that distance has evaporated. Next year, I will study international politics and conflict resolution at Queen's University in Belfast, one of the top universities in the acclaimed higher education system in the United Kingdom. I will be constantly exposed to the underlying tension that beleaguers the country, from going to class to walking through the “Protestant” and “Catholic” ends of town. Belfast offers the chance to witness a host of different divides involving symbols, culture, gender and politics. I will be constantly learning new methods for resolving deep-rooted conflict, skills I will hopefully use the rest of my life. All the while, I will be exposed to an array of fascinating personalities, from both the land and the people.
The Rotary Ambassadorial offers the chance of a lifetime, an adventure to lands we never before saw as attainable. In the past I could only describe Northern Ireland through a piecemeal text of tales and images; her real story was always unknown. Next year, the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship will take me on a journey to that unknown. The only true certainty will be discovery.
