Fulbright Award Winners

Selene Black Fulbright winnerSelene Black, a Spanish major with a Latin American Studies minor, has received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Argentina.  Black has studied at universities in both Spain and Chile, and is a Trustee’s Scholar. 

Brian Hoffman Fulbright WinnerBrian Hoffman, former SGA President and Political Science and Economics double major, has won a Fulbright Research grant to Malaysia. Hoffman is currently studying at the University of Hong Kong on a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship.

Wojciech Kapalczynzki Fulbright WinnerWojciech Kapalczynski, graduate student, a second year medical student and Honors graduate in Biology, has received a Fulbright Research Grant to Poland.  While in medical school, Kapalczynski has performed research at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center, worked as a pediatric intern at the Children and Youth Project Clinic, and volunteered in the Baptist Hospital East emergency room.

Ashley Kim Fulbright winnerAshley Kim, a Political Science major with a Spanish minor, will head to South Korea with a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship. Kim is the recipient of the 2008 Esselburn Award for Political Science and was named a Kentucky Colonel for her service to State Representative Tom Burch.

Monica Marks recipient of Phi Beta Kappa of Kentuckiana AwardMonica Marks, recipient of a Fulbright Research Grant to Turkey, has majors in Political Science, Philosophy, and Women and Gender Studies, and minors in Pan-African Studies and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies.  Marks previously won both the NSEP Boren and Critical Language Scholarships and is this year’s recipient of the College of Arts & Sciences Mary Churchill Humphrey Scholarship for study in England after she completes her Fulbright year.

Colin Ogilvie Fulbright winnerColin Ogilvie, a Liberal Studies major with an Environmental emphasis, has won a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Brazil.  Oglivie is an Ali and Hallmark Scholar and is a two time recipient of the University of Louisville Modern Languages Fund for Study Abroad.

Carl Williams Fulbright WinnerCarl Williams, undergraduate, a Political Science major with a Chinese Studies minor, has won a Fulbright English-Teaching Assistantship to Taiwan.  Williams is a Porter's Scholar and recipient of the Kesselman Award who has previously studied at Beijing Foreign Studies University with U of L’s summer language immersion program.

Sarah Oesterly Fulbright AlternativeSarah Oesterly, an Art, Anthropology, and Spanish triple major and Latin American Studies minor, has been selected as a Research Alternate for a Fulbright to Peru.  Oesterly has studied extensively in Spanish-speaking countries with Lewis, World Scholar, and Panama Scholars Awards.

Honors Graduate Boris ChernomordikNational Science Foundation Winner

Boris Chernomordik, a former Goldwater recipient, has received a National Science Foundation Fellowship.  This fellowship will fully fund his doctoral program in Chemical Engineering at the University of Minnesota.

Engish-Speaking Union Winner Abigail HeinigerNNSS Winner

Adam Marlowe, a former Fulbright and Boren scholar and current graduate assistant in the Center for Asian Democracy, has received funding to participate in the Nuclear Nonproliferation, Safeguards and Security in the 21st Century program this summer at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Ashley Harris and Emily Rath, both in their junior year, have been selected as finalists for the National Security Education Program David L. Boren Scholarship.  Harris, a former Critical Language Scholar and Political Science major and Middle East & Islamic Studies minor, plans to spend a full academic year studying in Israel.  Rath, a Political Science major, plans to use the Boren to supplement the Kansai Gaddai Scholarship she has already received for study in Japan.

*Remember REACH will conduct Finals Blitz from April 13 through April 29. Exam reviews will be offered for about 40 different 100, 200, and some 300 level courses. FREE snacks to aid study will be provided in the Strickler Hall lobby along with informational handouts on test-taking and stress reduction tips on April 21 and 22 from 10 a.m to 2 p.m..

SCA Internships
The Student Conservation Assocation is looking to select college students to work on Conservation Internships http://www.thesca.org/more-environmental-conservation-internships/

There are internships in over 50 environmental disciplines in natural areas across the United States including Alaska and Hawaii.They work on building trails, conservation projects and ecological research initiatives. Upward Bound Seeking Residence Counselors

The Upward Bound and Youth Toward Excellence Programs are now hiring Residence Counselors for the Summer of 2009. The summer program operating dates are May 25, 2009 through July 18, 2009. Arcadia Community Center Internships

The Arcadia Community Center is looking for an Intern. Of the some 1600 people residing in the neighborhoods surrounding the Community Center, the majority are internationals representing refugee and immigrant groups speaking more than 31 languages and from over 17 countries, including Kosovo, Bosnia, Cuba, Honduras, Guatemala, Iran, Iraq, Congo, Mexico, Sierra Leon, Sudan, Burundi and Togo. The majority are from Somalia--the Somali Bantu.
Four summer associates will work in partnership with our current project as relates to our goal: assisting with the difficult process of acculturation many of our residents face by increasing our center’s capacity to provide safe, educational, and interactive programming for the youth of the Arcadia neighborhood through a holistic approach that involves partnership and familiarity with the youths’ network of support such as family, neighborhood, ethnic community, school, and community center staff and volunteers. This is an unpaid internship that will start on June 1, 2009 and end on July 31, 2009. The last day to apply is May 20, 2009.
