THE BEST HONORS FRESHMAN CLASS YET! Honors Picnic Celebration Join us for a celebratory picnic in honor of our terrific University Honors Program and the wonderful new freshman class joining us. We won't be hard to find -- check in the grass near the Honors House Sept. 1 between 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Honors students tend to be hungry and they do come early. If you want to eat heartily, arrive before noon. We'll be inside if the weather is wet.
Attention Pre-Med Students Especially Freshmen Dean David Wiegman, admissions dean at U of L's med school, visits the Honors Program Monday, Sept. 19 for a pre-med discussion. The program is in Threlkeld room 132 at 5:30 p.m. Freshmen can especially benefit from this visit, but sophomores may also find it helpful. Anyone interested in pre-med is welcome.
It's Coming, It's Here The computer lab has new equipment coming! Sometime very soon the Honors House second floor computer lab will be fully renewed. In the meantime, most of the computers are functional and the printer works just fine. Those of you with laptops with wireless cards, the Honors House and the Etscorn Honors Center are now wireless, as is much of the campus. To use this network, you need to visit the wireless IT website.
Senior Honors Project Thursday, Sept. 8, at 4 p.m. is the date for the Senior Honors Project information meeting held in Ekstrom Library, room 254. Anyone beginning a Senior Honors Project during the 2005-2006 academic year needs to attend. Come find out about the latest in Senior Honors Project support resources. Meet the faculty readers and ask questions. A good deal of Senior Honors Project information is posted online, but this material is best used as a backup for information acquired in real time! If you have questions contact Melissa Stordeur at melissa.stordeur@louisville.edu or call 852-0025.
Honors Scholars' Banquet The Honors Scholars' fall banquet is Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. at the University Club. Invitations to be mailed to current Honors Scholars Aug. 29 request an RSVP by Sept 6. To help inform your Honors seminar choices, you'll be served a preview of spring Honors seminars and dinner. Freshman Honors students may sign up for Honors Scholars following the first semester grading period. If you have questions, please contact Melissa Stordeur at melissa.stordeur@louisville.edu or call 852-0025.
HONORS CONFERENCES REMINDER National Research Presentation This year the Honors Program is offering interested students the chance to attend the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) conference, scheduled to take place Oct. 26-30 in St. Louis. The Honors Program will pay for travel, hotel and conference registration expenses. In return, students who attend NCHC are expected to develop a presentation for either the fall 2005 or spring 2006 Kentucky Honors Roundtable (KHR) conference. If you are interested in attending NCHC, please complete the application form and return it to Luke Buckman (luke.buckman@louisville.edu or 502.852.6293) by Aug. 25. For more information on the conference and its tentative schedule, please check the website at NCHC.
Kentucky Honors Roundtable The fall 2005 Kentucky Honors Roundtable hosted by Murray State University is Oct. 7-8. Transportation is available for those attending. Freshmen, don't hesitate to jump right in and participate. Roundtables are fun and a great place to develop your Honors Program connections. Applications available soon in the literature rack in the Etscorn Honors Center. Watch for proposals due date. For more information contact Luke or Melissa at luke.buckman@louisville.edu or melissa.stordeur@louisville.edu or 852-6293.
Honors Web Pages We usually update the whole website -- more than 50 pages -- twice a year, once in late summer and again between semesters. If you wonder about the timeliness of the information, check the lower right hand corner for this information: Last content review August 9, 2005 Copyright (C) 2005-06. This gives you the most recent revision date. If you have questions about the deadlines published on some pages -- scholarships come to mind -- remember that deadlines are announced by different organizations at different times of year. We try to keep up with everything, but perfection is not possible. It is usually safe to remember that deadlines are about the same each year. But it is even safer to track down the date yourself.

NEW FEATURE Focusing on Undergraduate Research
Honors student Joseph Blackmon, chemistry, presents his work at the undergraduate Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) forum Aug. 3. See the online story featuring Joe. [photo by Dr. Pamela Feldhoff]
DISCOVERY, CREATIVE INQUIRY, INTELLECTUAL ACTIVITY – it’s all just another name for research. If you ever thought that research was not for you, it may be that your definition of research is a little too limited. Too often students see sophisticated posters full of data and graphs and assume that all research presentations look like that. This year, we want to showcase Honors students engaging in research. We begin with Joseph Blackmon, who was featured Aug. 1 at the U of L home page under news. We intend to look at many different expressions of undergraduate research. Keep your eyes on this spot in the newsletter to examine creative inquiry, discovery, intellectual activity and, yes, undergraduate research.
JOB OPPORTUNITY Federal Work Study A position for a federal work study student in the Service Learning office has opened. Contact Kim Shaver, Service Learning 852-3436 for an interview or stop by the Student Activities Center, room W318.
FYI Muhammad Ali Institute's New Website The Muhammad Ali Institute for Peace and Justice invites the U of L community to see its new website at http://www.aliinstitute.louisville.edu/. Formerly the Ali Institute for Peacemaking and Conflict Resolution, the Ali institute seeks to prepare and equip learners and practitioners with the sensitivities, skills and training that empowers them to work as advocates for peace and justice. The new website has information on the institute's mission, vision and program.
Honors Online Newsletter Geography Notice of our bi-weekly newsletter, complete with a link to our website, should come to your e-mail twice a month, eight issues a semester. In the left hand column, look for the calendar and the Honors Volunteer Program. In the center, you'll usually find the core Honors stories -- Honors events, conference announcements, registration news, special seminars -- the sort of news and activities you don't want to miss. In the right hand column we feature news about people, Honors student research and Honors faculty as well as scholarship and fellowship news, jobs and internships. If money interests you, keep an eye on the right column.
Pictures Pictures of Honors-related activities for our web pages and bulletin boards are welcome. If you have something you would like to share, bring in an extra copy or a copy we can color scan. If you take digital pictures, send a URL site location (preferred) or a digital copy to Ruth Spangler at rlspan02@louisville.edu. |
