The following list provides a glimpse into what fellowships and scholarships can offer. Many, perhaps most, provide full tuition and living stipends. Website links will help you further explore the material. The University Honors Program can help you identify appropriate scholarships and provide you with application support. American Scandinavian Foundation

Carnegie Endowment's Junior Fellows Program

Each year the endowment offers up to ten one-year fellowships to uniquely qualified graduating seniors and individuals who have graduated during the past academic year. They are selected from a pool of nominees from more than 300 colleges. Carnegie Junior Fellows work as editorial assistants and as research assistants to the endowment's senior associates. No one will be considered who has started graduate studies. The endowment's nomination deadline is January 15 of each year. Colleges generally set an earlier application deadline.

DAAD Awards

The DAAD supports the young international academic elite at Germany's higher education and research institutions by awarding scholarships and grants for students, practical interns, student trainees, doctoral candidates, academics, and scientists.

Freeman-Asia Awards

The primary goal of the Freeman-ASIA Program is to increase the number of American undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia, by providing students with the information and financial assistance they will need. Awardees will be expected to share their experiences with their home campus to encourage study abroad by others, and to spread understanding of Asia in their home communities. 

The USIA Fulbright Student Program

This is the U.S. Government's premier scholarship program. It enables U.S. students and artists to benefit from unique resources in every corner of the world. Gates Cambridge Scholarships

Gates Cambridge Scholarships seek scholars of outstanding academic merit and leadership potential who are committed to serving their communities, and who gain admission to the University of Cambridge to pursue courses of study. The Gates Cambridge Trust will cover the tuition and living expenses of studying at Cambridge.

Gilman Scholarship for Study Abroad

The Gilman Scholarship for Study Abroad is for US citizens receiving federal Pell Grants at a 2-year or 4-year college or university. Selected by competition, recipients are awarded up to $5,000 to defray the costs associated with studying abroad. Barry M Goldwater Scholarship

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who has served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate. The purpose of the foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.

Golden Key

Graduate Scholar Award gives twelve $10,000 scholarships to be used for post-baccalaureate or professional study at accredited institutions of higher learning (does not have to be in the U.S. or have a Golden Key chapter). Recipients must plan to enroll in graduate school in the fall of year received. Member does not have to be a U.S. citizen; member can apply up to five years after graduation; applicants may continue to re-apply as long as they are eligible, but previous recipients may not re-apply. Golden Key also offers seventeen other scholarship programs with awards of various amounts.

Hertz Fellowships

The Hertz Foundation provides fellowships tenable at 40 of the nation's finest universities for graduate work leading to award of the Ph.D. degree in applications of the physical sciences.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

Each year, Phi Kappa Phi offers fellowships and awards totaling more than $700,000. Every chapter has the opportunity to submit one nominee and each person nominated receives an Active-For-Life membership in the Society. The multidisciplinary nature of Phi Kappa Phi is reflected in its Fellowship and Award of Excellence recipients. Awardees represent a variety of fields including biology, chemistry, engineering, political science, mathematics and psychology. Likewise, the professions they select are equally diverse: law, medicine, business, education, science or the arts.

The James Madison Fellowship

The annual competition for James Madison Fellowships closes on March 1 of every year. These generous awards, named after the fourth president of the United States and acknowledged Father of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, are worth up to $24,000. They are intended to help you strengthen teaching in the nation's secondary schools about the history, principles and development of constitutional government in the United States.

Jacob K. Javits Fellowships

The program provides financial assistance to students who have demonstrated superior academic ability and achievement, exceptional promise, and financial need to undertake graduate study leading to a doctoral degree or Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in the selected fields of study of the arts, humanities and social sciences. Students must demonstrate financial need by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET)

The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program promotes mutual understanding between Japan and other nations. The JET program offers a year or two in Japan teaching in a high school or middle school or other post serving Japanese youth. Participants are not necessarily required to speak Japanese to qualify. JET exchange teachers receive generous compensation.

British Marshall Fellowships

British Marshall Scholarships may be held at any British university and cover two years of study in any discipline, at either undergraduate or graduate level, leading to the award of a British university degree.

Mitchell Scholarships

Mitchell Scholars are eligible to attend institutions of higher learning in Ireland, including the seven universities in the Republic of Ireland and the two universities in Northern Ireland, for one academic year of graduate study. Tuition and living expenses are provided. There are no restrictions as to academic field of study although the proposed course of study must be available at the university elected by the applicant and the applicant's undergraduate program must provide sufficient basis for study in the proposed field.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship

http://www.asee.org/ndseg/ The Department of Defense is committed to increasing the number and quality of our nation's scientists and engineers. Toward that end, the DOD annually supports approximately 8,000 graduate students in fields important to national defense needs.

National Institutes of Health Undergraduate Scholarship Program

The NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral and social science health-related research. The program is designed to improve access to education leading to research careers for those who have had fewer opportunities than others. It is primarily designed to provide an incentive for exceptional scholars to pursue biomedical research careers at the NIH. 

National Science Foundation

National Security Education Program (NSEP)/David L. Boren Scholarships

National Security Education Program was designed to provide American undergraduates with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experience in countries and areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation. As a student of another culture and language you will begin to acquire the international competence you need to communicate effectively across borders, understand other perspectives and analyze increasingly fluid economic and political realities.

Rhodes Scholarships

The Rhodes Scholarships, the oldest international fellowships, were initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902, and now bring outstanding students from many countries around the world to the University of Oxford. American Rhodes Scholars are selected through a decentralized process by which regional selection committees choose 32 Scholars each year from among those nominated by selection committees in each of the 50 states.

The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. The program sponsors several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. 

Soros Fellowships for New Americans

The purpose of The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans is to provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished new Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields.  

Harry S. Truman Scholarship

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation was established by Congress in 1975 as the official federal memorial to honor our thirty-third President. The foundation recognizes President Truman's contributions to the nation, his commitment to public service, and his interest in education. The foundation awards scholarships to college students who have outstanding leadership potential, plan to pursue careers in government or elsewhere in public service and wish to attend graduate school to help prepare for their careers. 

The Morris K. Udall Foundation Scholarship

The Morris K. Udall Foundation was established by the Congress of the United States in 1992 to honor Morris King Udall's thirty years of service in the House of Representatives a career distinguished by civility, integrity and consensus. Consistent with these values, the Udall Foundation is committed to educating a new generation of Americans to preserve and protect their national heritage through effective environmental public policy conflict resolution.
