About the College of Arts and Sciences Today
International Programs
The array of the College’s international programs has grown in recent years -- both in terms of the number of students participating and the range of countries represented. In 2005-06, 504 students studied abroad through A&S programs compared to 305 in 2002-03. The number of countries has grown to include Barbados, Belize, Brazil, China, England, France, Mexico, Panama, Portugal, South Africa, South Asia, and Trinidad. The number of programs in area studies has increased as well. In the last few years, programs in Judaic Studies, and Middle East and Islamic Studies have joined Latin American Studies as area studies offered through the College.
International Service Learning
The International Service Learning program enables students to learn about and experience life in other countries--while engaging in service projects designed to address pressing needs in those host countries. A&S faculty and students have participated in the ISL program in Belize since 1998 and will participate in the evolving ISL programs in Barbados and South Africa beginning in 2007. A&S has been a co-sponsor of the Univeristy-wide International Service Learning program in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007.
